Lookout (sometimes spelled as Look Out) is a village in the northern portion of the Caribbean island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory. The population was 696 as of 2018. [1] Lookout is the home of several notable buildings including St. Patrick's Church [2] and Blakes Estate Stadium, which is the largest stadium in Montserrat and has a higher capacity than the population of the entire town. [3] The stadium is the home of the Montserrat national football team and several club teams in the Montserrat Championship including Police, Ideal, Tremors, and others.

History

Lookout is the youngest settlement on Montserrat. [4] It was founded in 1998 following the 1997 Soufrière Hills eruption. Many of Lookout's current residents evacuated from Plymouth, the former capital of the island, which was destroyed in the eruption.

The Soufrière Hills are an active, complex stratovolcano with many lava domes forming its summit on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. After a long period of dormancy, the Soufrière Hills volcano became active in 1995 and has continued to erupt ever since. Its eruptions have rendered more than half of Montserrat uninhabitable, destroying the capital city, Plymouth, and causing widespread evacuations: about two-thirds of the population have left the island. Chances Peak in the Soufrière Hills was the highest summit on Montserrat until the mid-1990s, but it has since been eclipsed by various rising and falling volcanic domes during the recent volcanic activity.

The music of Montserrat is influenced by Irish traditions, noticeable in the set dance-like Bam-chick-lay, and the presence of fife and drum ensembles similar to the bodhrán. Natives are also witness to the jumbie dance, the style of which is still strongly African. Instruments include the ukulele and shak-shak, an African instrument made from a calabash gourd; both of these are used in traditional string bands. Calypso and spiritual-influenced vocal choirs, like the Emerald Isle Community Singers, are popular.

Blakes Estate Stadium, is a soccer stadium in Montserrat, near the village of Lookout. The stadium holds 1,000. On 2 April 2002, the officially named MFA Inc. Complex was completed using FIFA funds.

The Montserrat Championship is the top association football division in Montserrat. It was created in 1974 but has been competed-for only sporadically since then, partially as a result of the Soufrière Hills eruption causing widespread devastation to the island in 1997. Between 2005 and 2015, no league was played in this country at all. The league restarted in 2016, but has not been played since 2018.

Education in Montserrat is compulsory for children between the ages of 5 and 14, and free up to the age of 17. The Government of Montserrat developed an Education in the Country Policy Plan for 1998–2002 in conjunction with the United Kingdom. Under this plan, the government is supporting initiatives in the areas of curriculum development, student assessment and evaluation, professional development for teachers, post-secondary education expansion, and educational infrastructure and information technology.

The Montserrat national football team is the representative association football team of the small Caribbean island of Montserrat. Football is the second most popular sport in Montserrat after cricket, and official competitive football on the island is governed by the Montserrat Football Association (MFA). The association is affiliated to the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the team has, as of December 2009, entered seven Caribbean Cup competitions and three FIFA World Cup qualification campaigns. Montserrat played their first international fixture in 1991, which ended in a 0–3 defeat by Saint Lucia. In their second match, they secured a 1–1 draw with Anguilla. Montserrat lost their next seven matches before achieving their first ever victory on 26 March 1995, when they defeated Anguilla 3–2 at the Blakes Estate Stadium in Plymouth. Montserrat also went on to win their next match, again defeating Anguilla 1–0.

Ideal Sports Club is a Montserrat sports club based in Brades. Ideal SC is best known for their football team, who plays in the Montserrat Championship the highest tier of football on the island. The football club won the championship once in 2004.

The 2014 Caribbean Cup qualification began in May 2014 and ended in October 2014. The qualification competition determined which national teams could play in the 2014 Caribbean Cup which in turn determined which teams participated in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2016 Copa América Centenario.

Simon Peddie is a footballer who plays for Hashtag United in the Essex Senior League. He represented the Montserrat national team in 2014.

The Montserrat Secondary School, often referred to for short as MSS, is the only pre-16 years of age secondary school on the island of Montserrat. The school's campus is currently located in Salem. Prior to 2004 it was responsible for Montserrat's sixth-form education (post-16); currently Montserrat Community College (MCC) now offers Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) sixth-form classes.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory TremorsFootball Club, also known as MVO Tremors and Tremors FC are an association football team based in Brades, Montserrat, however due to the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano all home matches since 2002 have been played in the town of Lookout. They compete in the Montserrat Championship, the top flight football league in Montserrat. Their colours are green and red.
