Herman B Wells,a native of Boone County,Indiana,was the eleventh president of Indiana University Bloomington and its first university chancellor. He was pivotal in the transformation of Indiana University from a small,locally oriented college into a world-class institution of higher learning through expanded enrollment,recruitment of new faculty,construction of new buildings,new program offerings,and campus beautification projects. He remained steadfast in his support of IU's faculty and students,especially in the areas of academic freedom and civil rights. Wells began his career in banking,but served the university in a variety of faculty and administrative capacities during his seventy-year career at IU Bloomington:instructor and assistant professor,department of economics (1930–35;dean and professor of administration,school of business administration;acting president;president;university chancellor;interim president;and chairman of the board of the Indiana University Foundation,as well as other leadership roles at the IU Foundation.

Eugene Collins Pulliam was an American newspaper publisher and businessman who was the founder and president of Central Newspapers Inc.,a media holding company. During his sixty-three years as a newspaper publisher,Pulliam acquired forty-six newspapers across the United States. Major holdings of Central Newspapers,which he founded in 1934,included the Indianapolis Star,the Indianapolis News,the Arizona Republic,and the Phoenix Gazette,as well as newspapers in smaller cities in Indiana,Arizona,and other states. Pulliam's early career included work as a reporter for the Kansas City Star and as editor and publisher of the Atchison (Kansas) Daily Champion. Prior to 1960 Pulliam also operated radio stations WAOV and WIRE in Indiana and KTAR in Arizona. The Kansas native,a graduate from DePauw University in 1910,founded the DePauw Daily,an independent student newspaper,and in 1909 was one of ten DePauw students who cofounded Sigma Delta Chi,a journalism fraternity that was later renamed the Society of Professional Journalists. In August 2000,the Gannett Company acquired Central Newspapers for US$2.6 billion,with the Eugene C. Pulliam Trust as the principal beneficiary of the sale.
Ruth Simmons is an American professor and academic administrator. Simmons served as the eighth president of Prairie View A&M University,a HBCU,from 2017 until 2023. From 2001 to 2012,she served as the 18th president of Brown University,where she was the first African American president of an Ivy League institution. While there,Simmons was named best college president by Time magazine. Before Brown University,she headed Smith College,one of the Seven Sisters and the largest women's college in the United States,beginning in 1995. There,during her presidency,the first accredited program in engineering was started at an all-women's college.
Adam William Herbert,Jr. is an American retired academic administrator. He served as president of the University of North Florida from 1989 to 1998,as chancellor of the State University System of Florida from 1998 to 2001,and as president of Indiana University from 2003 to 2007. He was the first African-American to hold the latter two positions. He announced his retirement from Indiana University in 2007,and was succeeded by Michael McRobbie.

He participated in civic,philanthropic,cultural,and political aspects of the city and state and was valued for his sensitivity,wise counsel,personal and financial support,and sincerity. In addition to his many personal interests,Binford spearheaded a group to buy the Indiana Pacers basketball team in 1975 and served as its president and general manager for one year. From 1974 to 1995,Binford served as the Chief Steward of the Indianapolis 500,presiding over its transition from United States Auto Club governance to Indy Racing League governance.

Eugene Smith Pulliam was the publisher of the Indianapolis Star and the Indianapolis News from 1975 until his death. He was also a supporter of First Amendment rights,an advocate of press freedom,and opposed McCarthyism. The Kansas native,DePauw University graduate,and World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Naval Reserve pursued a six-decade-long career in journalism that included work for the United Press new agency,as news director of WIRE-AM in Indianapolis,and in various editorial and publishing positions at the Star and News before he succeeded his father,Eugene C. Pulliam,as publisher of the two newspapers. During Eugene S. Pulliam's tenure as publisher of the Star,it received two Pulitzer Prizes;one in 1975 for a series of articles on police corruption in Indianapolis and Marion County,Indiana,and another in 1991 for investigation of medical malpractice in Indiana. Pulliam also became executive vice president of Central Newspapers,Inc.,the media holding company his father founded in 1934. Dan Quayle,Eugene C. Pulliam's grandson and Eugene S. Pulliam's half nephew,served as the 44th Vice President of the United States from 1989 to 1993.
John David Millett was the 16th president of Miami University in Oxford,Ohio,and first chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents. During his career,he served as the Senior Vice President of the Academy for Educational Development in Washington,D.C. Millett Hall at Miami University and an academic building at Wright State University in Dayton,Ohio,are named in his honor.
