In 2018, HCR ManorCare filed for bankruptcy protection and agreed to be taken over by its landlord, Quality Care Properties and in April 2018, Quality Care Properties was acquired by a joint venture between Welltower and ProMedica. In November 2022, ProMedica announced it would end its joint venture with Welltower and would cede its 15% ownership of ProMedica Senior Care. Welltower announced a partnership with Integra Health shortly after which will take over control of all but 10 skilled nursing facilities from ProMedica. ProMedica will continue to operate the assisted living facilities gained under the original agreement.

Brian Thompson, CEO of the American UnitedHealthcare company since 2021, was shot and killed outside an entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan, New York City, on December 4, 2024. Thompson was in the city to attend an annual investors' meeting for UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. He had been criticized for UnitedHealthcare's rejection of insurance claims, and his family reported that he had received death threats in the past. The shooting occurred early in the morning, and the suspect, initially described as a white man wearing a mask, fled the scene. A suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was arrested five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
Nicholas Bernard Mangione was an American real estate developer. He was the founder of Lorien Health Services and owner of the radio station WCBM, both in Baltimore. Mangione also owned country clubs, hotels, and resorts in the Baltimore area, including Hayfields Country Club and Turf Valley. Mangione's descendants—10 children and 30 grandchildren—remain a prominent family in Maryland business and politics.
