The band was signed to Fearless Records and are known for "uniting boundaries between multiple genres in modern metal" and for "fusing unpredictable polyrhythms and sporadic partnering of melodic and dissonant passages". Original vocalist, James Harrison came up with the band name; naming it after the 1958 Lituya Bay earthquake and megatsunami that swallowed one of Alaska’s gulfs.

It was released on June 7, 2019, through Roadrunner Records and was produced by Drew Fulk and Chris "Motionless" Cerulli. It is the second release on a major label since the band's departure from Fearless Records. The album's tracklist was revealed on April 17 together with the release of the two singles, "Disguise", which had been premiered at Earthday Birthday in Orlando a few days prior, and "Brand New Numb". Disparity is the third full-length album by British metalcore band Oceans Ate Alaska, released on 1 September 2022 through Fearless Records. It is the last album before the band departed from the record label, and the last one to feature original vocalist James Harrison, who had previously recorded vocals for the band's 2015 album Lost Isles, and longtime lead guitarist Adam Zytkiewicz. Founding rhythm guitarist James Kennedy would later take over lead guitar, and Harrison was replaced by Spitting Teeth vocalist Joel Heywood.
