Calhoun Colored School was a private boarding and day school in Calhoun, Alabama, from 1892 until 1945.

In 1906, there was a Hayneville Graded School. [2] In 1908, there was a Hayneville High School. [3] Lois Janette Rogers was valedictorian there. [4]

The Calhoun School, sometimes referred to as Calhoun High School, is at 8213 County Road 33 in Letohatchee, Alabama. The vast majority of students are African American and from low-income families. The school serves about 200 students. [5] Tigers are the school mascot, and blue and white are the school colors. [6] The school is in a rural area. [1]

Hayneville is a town in Lowndes County, Alabama, United States and its county seat. At the 2010 census the population was 932, down from its record high of 1,177 in 2000. It is also part of the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. It initially incorporated in 1831, but lapsed, finally reincorporating in 1967. Before 1970, the town appeared only twice on the U.S. Census: in 1850 and 1890. The 1850 estimate of 800 residents ranked it as the largest town in the county at the time.

John Russell Tyson was an American lawyer, politician and judge. He served in the Alabama legislature before becoming a circuit judge, and later serving on the Alabama Supreme Court as associate justice and chief justice, before resigning to resume his legal practice. Elected as U.S. Representative for Alabama's 2nd congressional district in 1920, he won re-election in 1922, but died less than a month after being sworn in to the 67th U.S. Congress.

The Calhoun Colored School (1892–1945), was a private boarding and day school for Black students in Calhoun, Lowndes County, Alabama, about 28 miles (45 km) southwest of the capital of Montgomery. It was founded in 1892 by Charlotte Thorn and Mabel Dillingham, from New England, in partnership with Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee Institute, to provide education to rural black students. African Americans comprised the majority in this area, and the state had segregated facilities. Calhoun Colored School was first designed to educate rural black students according to the industrial school model common at the time.

Central High School is a public high school in Lowndes County, Alabama, at 145 Main Street in Hayneville, Alabama. The school has about 260 students, the vast majority African American. Students are mostly from low income families. The school, which scored in the bottom 6% of Alabama schools in reading and math, was listed as a failing school in 2019 under the Alabama Accountability Act. Lions are the school mascot and green and yellow the school colors.
