Luboml: My Heart Remembers is a 2003 documentary film produced by Eileen Douglas and Ron Steinman and funded by The Aaron Ziegelman Foundation. It compiles survivor interviews, archival photographs and film footage to reconstruct a sense of life in Luboml, one of the five thousand small shtetls (Jewish market towns) that were destroyed by the Holocaust. The film explores the vibrant Jewish life that – once central to European Jewry – is now forever lost. Made in 2003, Luboml: My Heart Remembers was called a "must see gem" by The Forward.
Luboml is situated 185 kilometres (115 mi) north of Lviv and 466 kilometres (290 mi) west of Kyiv, Ukraine, in the region of Eastern Europe known historically as Volhynia. It is located near the border with Belarus to its north, and Poland to the west. Because of its strategic location, Luboml had a long history of changing rule dating back to the 11th century. The territory of Volyn′ first belonged to Kievan Rus', then Poland, Lithuania, then Poland again, the USSR, and finally Ukraine. [1]
Before the Nazi-Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939 and the ensuing Holocaust, Luboml was a seat of the urban county in the Wołyń Voivodeship of the Second Polish Republic, with the highest percentage of Jews anywhere in Poland by 1931, exceeding 94% of the total population of over 3,300 inhabitants. [2] Following the Nazi German attack on the Soviet positions in eastern Poland, all Jews of Luboml were killed in a mass shooting action on the outskirts of town in October 1942. [3] The Luboml County was one of the epicenters of the massacres of Poles in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia by OUN-UPA several months later. [4]
The documentary exposes what the Nazis destroyed, resurrecting the past to depict a tightly-knit community. "Every place you went, people knew you," says an old man. The town's citizens worked together at the market square at the center of town, and they prayed together at the Great Synagogue. Like many shetlach that dotted Europe's landscapes, the people of Luboml shared both a religious tradition and sincere concern for each other. Every area of life, from work to holidays, from weddings to funerals, is described with colorful anecdotes and lively details, by the few who survived. [5]
Of the 8,000 Jews who lived in and around Luboml only 51 survived the Holocaust, and today, not a single Jew lives there. Luboml as it once was – a simple peaceful society – has been uprooted, and before this film, only existed in memories.
Isolated from urban societies, Luboml was a quaint blend of emerging technology and old fashioned practices. Most citizens lived without refrigerators or running water. "We always had a cow and a garden in front," one survivor reflects.
But the citizens didn't think of themselves as primitive. They were proud of the new cinema house and electric lights in the town's streets that went up in the idyllic period before they knew what danger lay ahead. At night, after dinner, all the youths would slip out of their homes to go on long walks together, guided by those electric lights.
The documentary suggests that the Jewish population was so full of concern for one another that economics became somewhat irrelevant. When one family didn't have enough money to provide for themselves, neighbors would anonymously donate food. One survivor reflects, "We didn't know if we were rich or poor. Most people were in the same class," while another chuckles, "I could have been poor, but I didn't know it."
But Judaism, which had brought the townspeople together, became the reason for their destruction. The seeds of anti-Semitism in Luboml, which had played out in name-calling and child's teasing before the war, morphed into a serious threat. The Nazis entered the peaceful market town in tanks. Fear and helplessness over came the town. One survivor wrote, "Only if one's hands have been amputated can you understand at all what a Polish Jew is going through." A lucky few fled from Poland.
The Luboml documentary makes it clear that despite all the time that has passed since its destruction, those survivors who once lived in Luboml still remember their hometown dearly. "Every night, before I fall asleep" mourns one survivor who fled Poland during the war, "I am in Luboml. Still today, I am in Luboml."
The documentary serves as a detailed portrait of shtetl life that was destroyed. As one survivor recalls, "It was warm. It was beautiful. It was happy. All that is gone."

Filmmaker Aaron Ziegelman stated the following about his experience of Luboml, his inspiration to make its Jewish history known, and about the making of his documentary:
I was a teenager when I received the news that my whole family in Luboml was killed. My first reaction was 'I'm glad I got out in time' and I went about my teenage activities. It was only years later that I truly understood the enormity of the tragedy and I would say that I felt guilty about my own initial reaction. Of course, the reality was that the whole world was silent including most of the Jewish community in America.
I believe the first instinct came after seeing the movie Schindler's List. I wanted to know about the people in the camps before they were brought there. The idea was also reinforced when I started having the Luboml Book translated from Yiddish into English. I realized that this was a good starting point to tell the story of life before death and destruction.
The part of the film shot in Luboml was exciting and emotional. Reliving my childhood, going to places that I remembered and the scene at the mass grave was very profound. I kept thinking of my uncle and aunt and their two daughters. These girls were my playmates and I saw them everyday[ sic?]. I imagined the terror they must have had being marched, all together, to their deaths. I refrained from voicing these feelings during the film because I knew that I would break down.

Shtetl or shtetel is a Yiddish term for the small towns with predominantly Ashkenazi Jewish populations which existed in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. The term is used in the contexts of peculiarities of former East European Jewish societies as islands within the surrounding non-Jewish populace, and bears certain socio-economic and cultural connotations. Shtetls were mainly found in the areas that constituted the 19th-century Pale of Settlement in the Russian Empire, as well as in Congress Poland, Austrian Galicia, the Kingdom of Romania and the Kingdom of Hungary.
Łęczna is a town in eastern Poland with 19,780 inhabitants (2014), situated in Lublin Voivodeship. It is the seat of Łęczna County and the smaller administrative district of Gmina Łęczna. The town is located in northeastern corner of historic province of Lesser Poland. Łęczna tops among the hills of the Lublin Upland, at the confluence of two rivers—the Wieprz, and the Świnka. On December 31, 2010, the population of the town was 20,706. Łęczna does not have a rail station, the town has been placed on a national Route 82 from Lublin to Włodawa. And shall be considered as a start point to Kameralne Pojezierze, as the town has decided to rebrand the lakeland district, from Pojezierze Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie, or Pojezierze Łęczyńskie, to Kameralne Pojezierze.
Volodymyr, previously known as Volodymyr-Volynskyi (Володимир-Волинський) from 1944 to 2021, is a small city in Volyn Oblast, northwestern Ukraine. It serves as the administrative centre of Volodymyr Raion and the center of Volodymyr urban hromada. It is one of the oldest cities in Ukraine and the historic centre of the region of Volhynia; it served as the capital of the Principality of Volhynia and later as one of the capital cities of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia. Podgórze is a district of Kraków, Poland, situated on the right (southern) bank of the Vistula River, at the foot of Lasota Hill. The district was subdivided in 1990 into six new districts, see present-day districts of Kraków for more details. The name Podgórze roughly translates as the base of a hill. Initially a small settlement, in the years following the First Partition of Poland the town's development was promoted by the Austria-Hungary Emperor Joseph II who in 1784 granted it the city status, as the Royal Free City of Podgórze. In the following years it was a self-governing administrative unit. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795 and the takeover of the entire city by the Empire, Podgórze lost its political role of an independent suburb across the river from the Old Town.

Berezne is a city in Rivne Oblast, Ukraine. It is located on the Sluch River north of Rivne. It was the administrative center of Berezne Raion until it was merged with Rivne Raion in 2020. Population: 13,126.
Trochenbrod or Trohinbrod, also in Polish: Zofiówka, or in Russian: Софиевка (Sofievka), in Ukrainian: Трохимбрід (Trokhymbrid), Hebrew: טרוכנברוד, was an exclusively Jewish shtetl – a small town, with an area of 1,728 acres (6.99 km2) – located in the gmina Silno, powiat Łuck of the Wołyń Voivodeship, in the Second Polish Republic and would now be located in Kivertsi Raion of Volyn Oblast in Ukraine. Following the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany and the Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, Zofiówka was renamed in Russian and incorporated into the new Volyn Oblast of the UkSSR. Two years later, at the start of Operation Barbarossa in 1941, it was annexed by Nazi Germany into the Reichskommissariat Ukraine under a new Germanized name. Trochenbrod (Zofiówka) was completely eradicated in the course of German occupation and the ensuing Holocaust. The town used to be situated about 30 kilometres (19 mi) northeast of Lutsk. The nearest villages of today are Yaromel (Яромель) and Klubochyn (Клубочин).
Lucjan Dobroszycki was a Polish scientist and historian specializing in modern Polish and Polish-Jewish history. A survivor of the Łódź Ghetto and Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz, Dobroszycki lived in Poland after World War II where he obtained his education and worked as a historian. His main focus was the Nazi German occupation of Poland.
The Story of Chaim Rumkowski and the Jews of Łódź is a 1982 documentary film that uses archival film footage and photographs to narrate the story of one of the Holocaust's most controversial figures, Chaim Rumkowski, a Jew put in charge of the Łódź ghetto by the German occupation authorities during World War II.

The Mizoch (Mizocz) Ghetto was a World War II ghetto set up in the town of Mizoch, Western Ukraine by Nazi Germany for the forcible segregation and mistreatment of Jews. On October 1942, Ukrainian Auxiliary Police and German policemen enclosed the ghetto ; an uprising erupted, and the remaining inhabitants were mass murdered. Their execution has been photographed by the SS.
Stanisław Jasiński and his daughter, Emilia Słodkowska née Jasińska, risked their lives and the lives of their families during the Holocaust in order to save Jews from extermination by the Ukrainian Nationalists and the Nazis. They were awarded the medals of Righteous among the Nations bearing their name, a certificate of honor, and the privilege of having their names added to those on the Wall of Honor in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, on February 28, 1985. Stanisław Jasiński received his title posthumously.
Samuel Willenberg, nom de guerreIgo, was a Polish Holocaust survivor, artist, and writer. He was a Sonderkommando at the Treblinka extermination camp and participated in the unit's planned revolt in August 1943. While 300 escaped, about 79 were known to survive the war. Willenberg reached Warsaw where, before war's end, he took part in the Warsaw Uprising. At his death, Willenberg was the last survivor of the August 1943 Treblinka prisoners' revolt.
Berek Lajcher was a Jewish physician and social activist from Wyszków before the Holocaust in Poland, remembered for his leadership in the prisoner uprising at Treblinka extermination camp. More than 800,000 Jews, as well as unknown numbers of Romani people, were murdered at Treblinka in the course of Operation Reinhard in World War II.
The Nowy Sącz Ghetto known in German as Ghetto von Neu-Sandez and in Yiddish as צאנז or נײ-סאנץ was a World War II ghetto set up by Nazi Germany for the purpose of persecution and exploitation of Polish Jews in the city of Nowy Sącz pronounced[ˈnɔvɨˈsɔnt͡ʂ] during the occupation of Poland (1939–45).
The Sarny Massacre was the execution of an estimated 14,000 to 18,000 people, mostly Jews, in the Nazi-occupied Polish city of Sarny on August 27 and 28, 1942.
