Luciana Alvarado Reid (born 16 September 2002) is a Costa Rican artistic gymnast who represented her country at the 2019 World Championships and the 2019 Pan American Games. [2] [3] [4] She took the silver medal in the all-around at the 2021 Pan American Championships, earning a continental berth for the 2020 Summer Olympics, and also became the Pan American champion on the balance beam. She is the first Costa Rican gymnast to qualify for the Olympics. [5] [6]
Alvarado was born on 16 September 2002 in San José, Costa Rica. She took up gymnastics at age two, and is coached by her mother, Sherlly Reid, who is a gym owner and former gymnast. Her sisters were also involved in gymnastics. Her middle sister, Mariana Sanchez Reid, is a former Costa Rica national team member. [7] [8] [9]
Alvarado competed at the 2016 Pacific Rim Championships, placing 10th in the all-around and 9th with the Costa Rican team. She also qualified to the uneven bars final, but struggled in the final, finishing eighth. [10] Later that year, Alvarado competed at the Pan American Championships, placing 10th in the all-around, fifth on the uneven bars and eighth on the balance beam, also contributing to the Costa Rican team's fifth-place finish. In June 2017, Alvarado competed at the Central American Sports Festival, placing fourth in the all-around and taking the silver medal on the uneven bars. [3]
Alvarado turned senior in 2018. She competed vault, beam and floor at the 2018 Pacific Rim Championships, and bars and beam at the Central American and Caribbean Games, but did not reach the finals. She made her senior debut in the all-around at the 2018 Pan American Championships, placing 18th. [3]
In 2019, Alvarado competed vault and beam at the FIT Challenge in Belgium, finishing 12th with the Costa Rican team. She represented Costa Rica at the 2019 Pan American Games, placing 13th in the all-around final. Alvarado made her World Championship debut at the 2019 World Championships. She placed 104th in the all-around during qualifications, missing out on an Olympic berth due to a fall. [11]
At the 2021 Pan American Championships, Alvarado scored a 50.833, taking the bronze medal in the all-around behind Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and Martina Dominici of Argentina. However, Dominici was later disqualified after she had tested positive for a banned substance, making Alvarado the all-around silver medalist. [12] Alvarado also qualified to the balance beam final, where she went on to win the gold medal. Based on the result of the all-around, she earned a continental quota spot to the Tokyo Olympics, becoming the first Costa Rican gymnast to qualify for an Olympic Games. [13] [14] [3]
At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Alvarado placed 51st in the all-around during qualifications with a score of 51.306, and did not advance to the final. [15] During the competition, Alvarado incorporated a tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement into her floor exercise choreography by taking the knee and raising her fist towards the sky. Yamilet Peña Abreu is an elite artistic gymnast from the Dominican Republic who won a gold medal at the 2014 World Challenge Cup and the 2012 Pan American Championship in vault and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Cup. She is known for her execution of the Produnova—a handspring double front on vault. She qualified for the vault finals at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2011 and the 2013 World Championships.
Alexa Citlali Moreno Medina is a Mexican artistic gymnast. She is the 2018 World bronze medalist on vault, the first Mexican female gymnast to medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She represented Mexico at the 2016 Summer Olympics where she was the second reserve for the all-around final and at the 2020 Olympics where she placed fourth in the vault final. She will represent Mexico at the 2024 Summer Olympics. She is the 2023 Pan American champion on vault. She won a silver medal on vault at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games and a bronze medal on vault at the 2010 Pacific Rim Championships. She is also a seven-time medalist on the FIG World Cup circuit. She is the 2011 Pan American Games and 2014 and 2018 Pan American Championships team bronze medalist and the 2010, 2014, and 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games team gold medalist.
Roxana Daniela Popa Nedelcu is a Romanian-born Spanish artistic gymnast. As member of the Spain women's national gymnastics team, she competed at the 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2019 World Championships, as well as the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Rebeca Rodrigues de Andrade is a Brazilian artistic gymnast. She is the 2020 Olympic, 2021 and 2023 World champion on the vault and 2022 World all-around champion. Andrade is the first Brazilian female gymnast to medal at an Olympic Games, and she is only the second Brazilian woman to win a gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. She is also the 2020 Olympic silver medalist, the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships silver medalist and the 2021 Pan American champion in the all-around, and won silver on the uneven bars at the 2021 World Championships, silver on the floor exercise at the 2023 World Championships, bronze on the balance beam at the 2023 World Championships and a bronze on the floor exercise at the 2022 World Championships. Andrade is one of only 11 female gymnasts to have medalled on every event in the history of World Championships, and one of only three gymnasts to have done so in the 21st century, alongside Simone Biles and Aliya Mustafina.
Marcia Teresa Videaux Jiménez is a Cuban artistic gymnast. She is the 2015 Pan American Games champion and the 2018 Pan American Championships silver medalist on the vault. She is the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games team, all-around, and floor exercise champion and the vault and uneven bars silver medalist. She has won four medals, including two gold, on the FIG World Cup series. She represented Cuba at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics.
Lorrane dos Santos Oliveira is a Brazilian artistic gymnast. She was a member of the Brazilian team that won a historic silver medal at the 2023 World Championships. She also won team bronze medals at the 2015 and 2019 Pan American Games. Individually, she is the 2021 Pan American uneven bars champion and all-around bronze medalist. She represented Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics and is set to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Ana Filipa da Silva Martins is a Portuguese artistic gymnast who competed at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. She won a bronze medal at the 2015 Summer Universiade on the balance beam. She is the first Portuguese gymnast to win a World Cup gold medal.
Ariana Gabriela Orrego Martínez is a Peruvian former artistic gymnast. She represented Peru at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. She was the first ever Peruvian gymnast to compete at the Olympic Games. She is a six-time gold medalist at the South American Championships.
Martina Dominici is an Argentine artistic gymnast. As a junior, she was the first non-European and the first Argentinian gymnast to win the TopGym, a famous junior competition held in Belgium. A senior gymnast since 2018, she has represented Argentina at the 2018 and 2019 World Championships as well as the 2019 Pan American Games. She is currently suspended for 3 years after testing positive for a banned substance in the 2021 Pan American Gymnastics Championships
Costa Rica competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the nation's sixteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics, since its debut in 1936. Costa Rica failed to win any medal for the fifth consecutive Olympics.
Alba Petisco de San Fulgencio is a Spanish artistic gymnast. She represented Spain at the 2020 Olympic Games and the 2018 Youth Olympics where she was part of the Mixed NOC team who won gold in the mixed multi-discipline team competition. She won a bronze medal with the Spanish team at the 2022 Mediterranean Games. Additionally, she is the 2020 and 2022 Spanish all-around champion. She will represent Spain at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Audrys Nin Reyes is a Dominican artistic gymnast. He is the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games vault champion. He was the first Dominican gymnast to win a gold medal at the Pan American Games. He was also the first Dominican gymnast to win a gold medal at an FIG World Cup event when he won the vault title at the 2017 Osijek World Challenge Cup. He is the 2017 Pan American vault and horizontal bar champion and the 2017 Universiade vault champion. He is also the 2018 and 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games vault champion. He has qualified to represent the Dominican Republic at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the first male gymnast from his country to do so.
Martina Maggio is an Italian artistic gymnast. She represented Italy at the 2020 Olympic Games. She was a member of the gold medal winning teams at the 2022 Mediterranean Games and the 2022 European Championships. She was also the alternate for the team who won bronze at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart. Individually she is the 2022 Mediterranean Games all-around champion, the 2022 European all-around bronze medalist, the 2022 European silver medalist on floor, and 2016 European junior vault champion.
Ana Luiza Pires Lima is a Brazilian artistic gymnast and a member of the Brazilian national gymnastics team. Lima represented her country at the 2019 Junior World Championships. She made her international senior debut at the 2021 Pan American Championships where she helped Brazil win the team gold and also won an individual gold medal on the floor exercise.
Júlia das Neves Botega Soares is a Brazilian artistic gymnast and a member of the Brazilian national gymnastics team. Soares represented her country at the 2019 Junior World Championships, where she was a finalist on the balance beam. She made her international senior debut at the 2021 Pan American Championships where she helped Brazil win the team gold, and also took an individual bronze medal on the balance beam. She debuted a new skill, a candle mount with a half twist on the balance beam, which was named after her in the Code of Points. She was part of the silver medal-winning Brazilian team at the 2023 World Championships.
Abigail Magistrati is an Argentine former artistic gymnast. She represented Argentina at the 2020 Summer Olympics after Martina Dominici, the original qualifier, tested positive for a banned substance. She is the 2021 Pan American team and floor exercise bronze medalist. She is the 2019 South American all-around and team champion and the 2022 South American balance beam champion. She is the 2022 Argentine all-around, balance beam, and floor exercise champion.
Natalia Isabel Escalera Cárdenas is a Mexican artistic gymnast. She is the 2021 Pan American champion and the 2023 Pan American Games bronze medalist on the vault. She will represent Mexico at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
