Ludovico Technique is an American industrial gothic metal band from New York City, New York. Formed in 2011, the band is fronted by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumental artist, Ben V. [1] [2] The additional touring members of the band remain anonymous. [3]

Their track "I Was" charted at #20 in the Deutsche Alternative Charts in September 2021. [4] [5] [6] "Becoming Numb" reached #1 in the iTunes Metal Charts in South Africa and #18 in the iTunes Electronic charts. [4] "Up To the Flames" reached #5 in the iTunes Rock Charts in Sweden. "Absence" [7] debuted at #1 in the Goth Industrial Metal genre on Amazon.

"Haunted" was named one of "The Essential Halloween: Past and Present" tracks by Knotfest. [8]

Biography

Formed in 2010, Ludovico Technique derives their name from the Anthony Burgess novel, as well as the Stanley Kubrick cinematic adaptation, A Clockwork Orange. [9] The band was formed by Ben V., original founder of Beyond Therapy Records.

In 2010 the band released their first 5-track, self-titled EP, Ludovico Technique. After this release, the band embarked on their first US tour. [9]

In late 2011 [9] the band signed to Metropolis Records. [10] Ludovico Technique’s first major release was in 2012 with “Some Things Are Beyond Therapy” on Metropolis Records. [7] Followed by extensive US and European touring [11] [10] In 2013, the band released their sophomore full-length “We Came To Wreck Everything”.

In 2017, after extensive touring with acts such as Leæther Strip, [12] The Birthday Massacre and Army of the Universe, [13] [10] [14] the band released their single “Absence” [10] their most popular single to date with over 1 million streams. [ citation needed ] In 2020, the band returned and began releasing singles on a semi-monthly basis including: “Live As Myself,” [15] “Up to the Flames,” “Embrace,” [16] [17] “Becoming Numb,” [18] “Poisoned,” “Burn Everything,” “I Was,” [19] “Haunted,” and “Noise Is Gone“.[ citation needed ] Ludovico Technique was described as "dripping with quintessential gothic darkness" and "Passionate, intelligent, and not your run of the mill modern industrial" by Metal Injection. [20]

Grammy nominee, Stuart Hawkes, known for his work on Amy Winehouse, Lorde, and Ed Sheeran has mastered a number of Ludovico Technique's tracks, including: "Live As Myself" [21] and "Poisoned" [22]

In 2022, Ludovico Technique released their next full-length album, “Haunted People”.

Musical style and influences

The band is described by AllMusic as a blend of electronic, gothic metal, alternative metal, and industrial metal. [23] They have also been called industrial [24] as well as post-punk. The group's song structure commonly features intricate riffs coupled with keyboard effects. The band’s overall sound has been stated to be “the very embodiment of the Gothic aesthetic in its purest form,” [25] “full of nightmarish energy and devastating, electrified beauty,” [9] and that they "showcase a thoughtful depth and complexity unmatched by many bands." [26] Ben V. has been described as “a vocal powerhouse not afraid to experiment with sounds” [27] Alternative Press (magazine) described their more recent singles as adding "gritty rock dimension to the eclectic, industrial–goth foundation the band have so masterfully established." [18]

The band members themselves have stated that they are influenced from a wide variety of artists such as Skinny Puppy and The Sisters of Mercy, as well as Type O Negative, Rammstein, and Rob Zombie.

Wumpscut is a gothic influenced electro-industrial music project from Germany. It was founded in May 1991 by Bavarian disc jockey Rudolf "Rudy" Ratzinger.

Leæther Strip is a Danish musical project founded on 13 January 1988 by Claus Larsen. Its influence has been most felt in the electronic body music and electro-industrial genres. Leæther Strip was one of the earliest and most prominent acts on Germany's now defunct Zoth Ommog record label. For distribution outside of Europe, the music has been licensed to the U.S. labels Cleopatra Records and Metropolis Records. After the demise of Zoth Ommog in 1999, Larsen signed to Bloodline Records, which only released a single before also going out of business. In 2005, Leæther Strip signed with the Belgian-based label Alfa Matrix. On 3 June 2011 Larsen announced his split from Alfa Matrix in order to self-release future material.

Electro-industrial is a music genre that emerged from industrial music in the early 1980s. While EBM has a minimal structure and clean production, electro-industrial tends to have a grittier, complex and layered sound with a more experimental approach. The style was pioneered by Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly, Numb, and other groups, either from Canada or the Benelux. In the early 2000s style spawned the aggrotech offshoot. The fan base for the style is linked to the rivethead subculture.

Nox Arcana is the American neoclassical dark wave, dark ambient musical project of Joseph Vargo. It was founded in 2003 as a duo with William Piotrowski, who left in 2008 to pursue a career in film score composing but still acts as its studio engineer whereas Vargo continued on as a solo act under the name. According to the Nox Arcana biography, the name in Latin translates to "mysteries of the night," but actually translates to "mysterious night;" "mysteries of the night" would translate to arcāna noctis.

In This Moment is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, formed by singer Maria Brink and guitarist Chris Howorth in 2005. They found drummer Jeff Fabb and started the band as Dying Star. Unhappy with their musical direction, they changed their name to In This Moment and gained two band members, guitarist Blake Bunzel and bassist Josh Newell. In 2005, bassist Newell left the band and was replaced by Jesse Landry.

Motionless in White is an American heavy metal band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. Formed in 2004, the band consists of lead vocalist Chris "Motionless" Cerulli, guitarists Ryan Sitkowski and Ricky "Horror" Olson, drummer Vinny Mauro and bassist Justin Morrow. Cerulli is the only founding member remaining. The band has stated that their band name derived from the Eighteen Visions song "Motionless and White".

Orkus is a monthly German music and culture magazine published by the Zoomia Media Group. Despite its subtitle and its web tagline, it includes all popular music genres including metal, medieval rock, Neue Deutsche Härte, alternative rock, electro and futurepop. The gothic rock, dark wave and industrial music genres have had only a minor presence since the late 1990s.
