Luigi Soreca is an Italian diplomat serving as the EU Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina since September 2024. [1] [2]
A lawyer by training,Soreca started his career in the banking sector in Italy and then he worked for the Ministry of the Interior in Italy for six years before joining the Commission in 1998. [3] [4] Between 2018 and 2022,he served as the EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Albania. [5] [6]
Soreca is married. He holds a degree in law from the L.U.I.S.S. University in Rome. [7]
The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP) is the chief co-ordinator and representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) within the European Union (EU). The position is currently held by Josep Borrell Fontelles.
Operation Althea,formally the European Union Force Bosnia and Herzegovina (EUFOR),is a military deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina to oversee the military implementation of the Dayton Agreement. It is the successor to NATO's SFOR and IFOR. The transition from SFOR to EUFOR was largely a change of name and commanders:80% of the troops remained in place. It replaced SFOR on 2 December 2004.

Bosnia and Herzegovina takes part in the Stabilisation and Association Process and trade relations are regulated by an Interim Agreement.

There are currently nine states recognized as candidates for membership of the European Union:Albania,Bosnia and Herzegovina,Georgia,Moldova,Montenegro,North Macedonia,Serbia,Turkey,and Ukraine. Kosovo formally submitted its application for membership in 2022 and is considered a potential candidate by the European Union. Due to multiple factors,talks with Turkey are at an effective standstill since December 2016.
