The International Shooting Sport Federation recognizes several shooting events, some of which have Olympic status. They are divided into four disciplines: rifle, pistol, shotgun and running target.
Switzerland competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany. 151 competitors, 122 men and 29 women, took part in 116 events in 17 sports.

The ISSF World Shooting Championships are governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. World Shooting Championships began in 1897, after the successful 1896 Summer Olympics, and although the ISSF was not founded until 1907, these early competitions are still seen by the organization as the beginning of a continuous row of championships. By this logic, the 2006 competition in Zagreb was called the 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships. These championships, including all ISSF shooting events, are held every four years since 1954. For the shotgun events only, there is an additional World Championship competition in odd-numbered years. These extra competitions are not numbered. In running target, there will be World Championships in Olympic years.
Matthew D. Emmons is an American rifle shooter. He competed in various events at the 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics and won a gold, a silver, and a bronze medal.

Hrachya Petikyan is an Armenian sports shooter and USSR, European, four-time World and Olympic Champion. Petikyan is a four-time Olympian who has represented three nations: the Soviet Union, the Unified Team and the Republic of Armenia. He has been awarded the Honored Master of Sport of the USSR title.

Guy Starik is an Israeli sport shooter who has competed in four Olympics. He has won gold medals in shooting at both the European Championships and at four World Cups, and shares the world record in the 50 meter rifle prone competition.
Rolf Martin Anker Hagen was a Norwegian sport shooter who competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Participating in two events, he finished 13th in a field of 44 shooters in the 50 metre rifle prone competition and 30th among 44 shooters in the 50 metre rifle three positions competition. A native of Oslo, he also attended the 1954 ISSF World Shooting Championships, where he brought home four medals from the team tournament: silver in the 50 metre free rifle prone and standing 40 shots events and bronze in the 50 metre free rifle kneeling 40 shots and 50 metre rifle three positions events.
Jasmine Ser Xiang Wei is a Singaporean sports shooter. She competed in the Women's 10 metre air rifle and the 50 metre rifle 3 positions events at the 2012 Summer Olympics. More recently, she won gold in the 50 meter rifle 3 positions category with a Games record at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She previously won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 10 air rifle, and silver in the 50 m rifle 3 positions and the 10 m air rifle pairs and the 50 m rifle pairs at the same Games. She also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics. When she won silver at the 2006 Asian Games in the 10 m team air rifle event, her sister, Adrienne Ser, was part of the team.
Dane Sampson is an Australian sports shooter. He competed in the 10 metre air rifle, 50 metre rifle three positions and 50 metre rifle prone events at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Péter Sidi is a Hungarian sport shooter. He has been world champion in the 50 m rifle 3 positions, as well as winning silver medals in the 300 m rifle prone and the men's 10 metre air rifle. He has also won bronze medals in the 50 metre rifle 3 positions and the 50 m rifle prone team event. He currently holds the qualification world record in 10 m Air Rifle.

The men's 50 metre rifle, prone was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1952 Summer Olympics programme. It was the seventh appearance of the event. The competition was held on 29 July 1952 at the shooting ranges in Helsinki. 58 shooters from 32 nations competed.
The mixed 50 metre rifle, prone was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the thirteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held on 19 July 1976 at the shooting ranges in Montreal. 78 shooters from 45 nations competed.
The men's 50 metre rifle, prone was a shooting sports event held as part of the Shooting at the 1984 Summer Olympics programme. The competition was held on July 30, 1984, at the shooting ranges in Los Angeles. 71 shooters from 46 nations competed.
Milenko Sebić is a Serbian sports shooter. He won a bronze medal in men's 50 metre rifle 3 positions at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
