Lurinjyoti Gogoi (born 28 December 1977) is an Indian politician and former student leader from Assam. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] He currently serves as the President of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), [7] a regional political party in Assam. Prior to his political career, Gogoi was the General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) from 2015 to 2020, [8] [9] [10] where he was actively involved in various youth and regional movements. Known for his strong opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he emerged as a prominent voice representing Assamese identity and rights. He has contested elections to the Assam Legislative Assembly and the Lok Sabha, becoming a key figure in regional politics.
He was born on 28 December 1977 in Maranakari village of Laipuli Gaon Panchayat in Tinsukia district. His father was Prabin Gogoi and his mother was the late Dulu Gogoi. He is the only son of the family. [11] [12]
Gogoi began his schooling at Laipuli Primary School, followed by Laipuli Middle English School. He completed his High School Leaving Certificate from Tinsukia Higher Secondary School (Sripuria) and passed his Higher Secondary Examination from Chenairam Higher Secondary School, Tinsukia. He graduated with a degree in Mathematics from Tinsukia College, affiliated to Dibrugarh University, in 2004. He later completed his B.Ed and M.Ed degrees. [11] [13]
In the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, Lurinjyoti Gogoi contested from two constituencies Duliajan and Naharkatia. He represented the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP). However, he lost in both seats. In Duliajan, he was defeated by Terash Gowalla of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while in Naharkatia, he lost to BJP candidate Taranga Gogoi. [14]
In the 2024 general election, Lurinjyoti Gogoi contested from Dibrugarh as the INDIA alliance candidate against former Chief Minister of Assam and Cabinet Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Despite a spirited campaign, Gogoi lost by a margin of 2.79 lakh votes. Sonowal secured 6,93,762 votes (54.27%), while Gogoi received 4,14,441 votes (32.42%) and AAP's Manoj Dhanowar came third.
