Luukas Vaara (born 22 April 2001) is a Finnish basketball player who plays for Salon Vilpas in Finnish Korisliiga. He started basketball in youth teams of Namika Lahti and Lahti Basketball.
In his early senior career, Vaara played in Finland for Lahti Basketball and Pussihukat. For the 2020–21 season, he joined Helsinki Basketball Academy team HBA-Märsky playing in second-tier Koripallon I-divisioona.
On 1 July 2021, Vaara signed with French club SIG Strasbourg. He played mostly with the U21-team but debuted in LNB Pro A with the first team. [1]
On 15 June 2022, Vaara left Strasbourg and joined Phoenix Hagen in German second-tier Pro A. [2] [3]
In 2023, he returned to Finland and signed with Korisliiga team Vilpas Vikings in Salo for the 2023–24 season. [4]
A former youth international, Vaara has played in six matches for the Finland national basketball team. [5] He also represented Finland in the postponed 2021 Summer Universiade competitions in Chengdu in the summer 2023, [6] where Finland finished 5th, the best position in the nation's history.
Strasbourg Illkirch-Graffenstaden Basket, most commonly known as SIG Basket or SIG Strasbourg, is a French professional basketball club that is based in Strasbourg. The Korisliiga is the top-tier professional basketball league in Finland, comprising the top 12 teams of the country. In its current format, each team plays all other teams two times in the regular season, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 regular season games. The top six teams advances continues to upper stage and the bottom six teams plays lower stage after 22 games, 5 games at home and 5 games at away versus all other teams in stage. The best two teams from lower group joins to playoffs with upper group teams. Playoffs are played best of seven format, except the quarter-finals which are played best of 5 format. Pantterit holds the record for the most league titles won, with 14. The top level Finnish league for women is the Naisten Korisliiga.
The 2016–17 Korisliiga season is the 77th season of the top professional basketball league in Finland. The season started on October 5, 2016, and ended on May 13, 2017. Kataja Basket won its second national title after beating Salon Vilpas in the Finals.
