Politics of India works within the framework of the country's Constitution. India is a parliamentary secular democratic republic in which the president of India is the head of state &first citizen of India and the Prime Minister of India is the head of government. It is based on the federal structure of government,although the word is not used in the Constitution itself. India follows the dual polity system,i.e. federal in nature,that consists of the central authority at the centre and states at the periphery. The Constitution defines the organizational powers and limitations of both central and state governments;it is well recognised,fluid and considered supreme,i.e. the laws of the nation must conform to it. India is officially declared a secular and socialist state as per the Constitution.
Puducherry,also known as Pondicherry,is a union territory of India,consisting of four small geographically unconnected districts. It was formed out of four territories of former French India,namely Pondichéry,Karikal (Karaikal),Mahéand Yanaon,excluding Chandannagar (Chandernagore),and it is named after the largest district,Puducherry,which was also the capital of French India. Historically known as Pondicherry,the territory changed its official name to Puducherry on 1 October 2006.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is an Indian regional political party with great influence in the state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry. It is a Dravidian party founded by the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu M. G. Ramachandran (M.G.R.) at Madurai on 17 October 1972 as a breakaway faction from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam after M. Karunanidhi expelled him from the party for demanding an account as the party treasurer. The party is adhering to the policies of socialism and secularism based on the principles of C. N. Annadurai (Anna) collectively coined as Annaism by M.G.R. The party has won a seven-time majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and has emerged as the most successful political outfit in the state's history. It is currently the main opposition party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
A member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency,the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Each state has between seven and nine MLAs for every Member of Parliament (MP) that it has in the Lok Sabha,the lower house of India's bicameral parliament. There are also members in three unicameral legislatures in Union Territories:the Delhi Legislative Assembly,Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. Only a Member of the Legislative Assembly can work as a minister for more than 6 months. If a non-Member of the Legislative Assembly becomes a Chief Minister or a minister,he must become an MLA within 6 months to continue in the job. Only a Member of the Legislative Assembly can become the Speaker of the Legislature.
Pondicherry is the capital and most populous city of the Union Territory of Puducherry in India. The city is in the Puducherry district on the southeast coast of India and is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east and the state of Tamil Nadu,with which it shares most of its culture,heritage,and language.
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian union territory (UT) of Puducherry,which comprises four districts:Puducherry,Karaikal,Mahéand Yanam. Out of eight union territories of India,only three have legislatures and they are Delhi,Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. After delimitation shortly after its formation,the Puducherry legislative assembly has 33 seats,of which 5 are reserved for candidates from scheduled castes and 3 members are nominated by the Government of India. 30 out of 33 Members are elected directly by the people based on universal adult franchise and the remaining three are nominated by the central government. These nominated members enjoy the same powers as elected members of the assembly.
Edappadi Karuppa Palaniswami,often referred to by his initials E.P.S.,is an Indian politician who is the current leader of opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He served as the 7th chief minister of Tamil Nadu,from 2017 to 2021. He has been the General Secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) since 28 March 2023. Previously,Palaniswami has served as the interim general secretary (2022–23),joint co-ordinator (2017–22) and headquarters secretary (2016–22) of AIADMK.
A union territory is a type of administrative division in the Republic of India. Unlike the states of India,which have their own governments,union territories are federal territories governed,in part or in whole,by the Union Government of India. There are currently eight union territories in India:Andaman and Nicobar Islands,Chandigarh,Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu,Delhi (NCT),Jammu and Kashmir,Ladakh,Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
The All India N.R. Congress is a regional political party formed by the Chief Minister of Puducherry,N. Rangaswamy in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. He announced the party formation on 7 February 2011 in the party's head office in Pondicherry as a breakaway from the Indian National Congress. It fought the 2011 elections by allying with AIADMK and won the majority. Since 2014,it is part of the National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP. NDA alliance won the majority in the 2021 elections and is currently the ruling party of the union territory.
A legislative assembly election was held in the Indian union territory of Puducherry 13 April 2011 to elect members from thirty constituencies in the non-contiguous territory. This election was meant to constitute the Thirteenth Assembly of Pondicherry.
