P. Shanmugham (25 March 1927 –2 February 2013) (Born to Panchanatha Mudaliyar - Gowri) was the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry. He served from 22 March 2000 to 27 October 2001. [1] [2]
A staunch loyalist of the Nehru-Gandhi family,he was in politics since 1950. He was the Leader of the Opposition between 1969 and 1973 when the DMK formed the government. He represented Puducherry in the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms from 1980 and was elected to Puducherry Assembly thrice. He held the post of Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee for about 33 years. He played key role in the formation of many governments in the Union Territory. [3]
Puducherry, also known as Pondicherry or Pondichéry, is a union territory of India, consisting of four small geographically unconnected districts. It was formed out of four territories of former French India, namely Pondichéry , Karikal (Karaikal), Mahé and Yanaon, excluding Chandannagar (Chandernagore), and it is named after the largest district, Puducherry, which was also the capital of French India. Historically known as Pondicherry, the territory changed its official name to Puducherry on 20 September 2006.

V. Venkatasubba Reddiar was the second Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Pondicherry (Puducherry). He was born in a wealthy agricultural family at Madukkarai, Pondicherry. His parents are Vaithilingam Reddiar and Vemalammal. His father Vaithilingam Reddiar was the Mayor of Nettapakkam commune during French rule. His son V. Vaithilingam was also the chief minister of Pondicherry.
Subrahmanyan Ramaswamy was an Indian politician who was the fourth Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry, then Pondicherry. He served 3rd Assembly from 6 March 1974 to 28 March 1974 and 4th Assembly from 2 July 1977 to 12 November 1978.

After merger of French settlements into Indian Union, a new assembly, named as Pondicherry Representative Assembly has been created by Government of India. After the de facto transfer day on 1 October 1954 and before the 16 August 1962, also referred as de-jure transfer day. During this transision period, the general elections to the representative assembly were held in 1955 and 1959. After the de-jure transfer day, legal integration of French settlements with the Indian Union was complete. However, this assembly like its predecessor was just advisory in its role which led to frequent contention between the popular government and the Chief commissioner.
The Second Assembly of Pondicherry succeeded the First Assembly of Pondicherry and was constituted after the victory of Indian National Congress (INC) and allies in the 1964 assembly election held on 23 August 1964. Venkatasubba Reddiar assumed office as 2nd Pondicherry. These were the first Legislative Assembly elections after the formation of the new Union Territory.
After the de facto merger on 1 November 1954 and before the legal integration with the Indian Union on 16 August 1962, general elections were held in 1955 and 1959. In January 1955, The Indian union government renamed the French settlements in India as State of Pondicherry by passing an order. The previous assembly that was elected during French rule was dissolved on 13th June 1955 and the first general elections to the Pondicherry Representative Assembly were held in next month from July 18 to 23 for 39 constituencies. The election were held on the basis of adult franchise under the State of Pondicherry Order, 1955 which prescribed the rules and regulations for the conduct of elections, more or less on the pattern adopted in the Indian Union.
The Fourteenth Assembly of Pondicherry succeeded the 13th Assembly of Pondicherry and was constituted after the victory of Indian National Congress (INC) and allies in the 2016 assembly election held on 16 May 2016.
Elections to the Puducherry Legislative Assembly were held in February 1974, to elect members of the 30 constituencies in Puducherry, in India. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won the most seats, and its leader, S. Ramassamy was appointed as the Chief Minister of Puducherry.
