Alappuzha district, is one of the 14 districts in the Indian state of Kerala. It was formed as Alleppey district on 17 August 1957, the name of the district being changed to Alappuzha in 1990. Alappuzha is the smallest district of Kerala. Alleppey town, the district headquarters, was renamed Alappuzha in 2012.

It is located 43 km (26.7 mi) south of the district headquarters in Alappuzha and about 95 km (59.0 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. As per the 2011 Indian census, Mavelikara has a population of 26,421 people, and a population density of 2,088/km2 (5,410/sq mi).
St. Berchmans College, most commonly known as SB College, is one of the first autonomous colleges, situated in Changanasserry, 17 km from Kottayam, in Kerala, India. Established in 1922, the college is considered to be one of the oldest and premier institutions of higher education in India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) identified the college under its “College with Potential for Excellence” scheme. UGC and the Government of Kerala granted autonomy to the college on 13 June 2014. The college celebrated its centenary in the academic year of 2022.

Vellayani Arjunan was an Indian writer, scholar, and linguist from Kerala. He served two terms at the State Institute of Encyclopaedic Publications as chief editor from 1975 to 1988 and as director from 2001 to 2004. During his tenure at the institute, seven volumes of the 12-volume Malayalam encyclopedia Viswasahityavijnanakosam were published. He is credited with several publications, including children's literature and critical studies. His book Gaveshana Mekhala has been a prescribed text for the post graduate course M.A. Malayalam at the Aligarh Muslim University. A recipient of the Paramacharya Award from Sarojini Bhaskaran Memorial Charitable Public Trust, he was honored by the Government of India in 2008 with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Kalloor Oommen Philipose Asan (1838–1880) was a priest, teacher, literary scholar, journalist, playwright and translator from Kerala, India. He was born in Kallooppara near Tiruvalla and grew up in Olassa in the present-day Kottayam district of Kerala. He was the editor of Paschima Taraka, one of the earliest Malayalam journals. The journal was a Malayalam publication from the publishers of the Cochin-based English newspaper Western Star. Philippose was fluent in English and Malayalam, and translated The Comedy of Errors into Malayalam under the title Almarattam (1866) which was the first translation of Shakespeare into Malayalam. It was also one of the earliest plays written in Malayalam and was the first play to be published as a book.
