The M8 is a short metropolitan route in the City of Johannesburg, South Africa. It starts in Florida Park, Roodepoort and ends in Linden, Randburg to the east. [1] [2]
The M8 begins at a T-junction with the M18 (Ontdekkers Road) in Florida Park, Roodepoort and heads in a north-east direction as William Nicol Drive. [3] : 78 It forms an interchange with the M47 at Hendrik Potgieter Drive before continuing east as 14th Avenue and forming an interchange with the N1 highway (Western Bypass) in Fairland. [3] : 78 After a short distance, the M8 turns north-east as Weltervreden Road in Berario and as Pendoring Road in Northcliff. [3] : 53 Here, the M8 crosses the M5 (Beyers Naudé Drive) and continues north-east, for a short distance, as Judges Avenue through Cresta and crosses the M20 (Republic Road). [3] : 54 Continuing eastwards as Judges Avenue, it intersects the R512 (Malibongwe Drive) at a T-junction. [3] : 54 Here, the M8 turns north, briefly co-signed with the R512 for 100m and then turns east as the one-way South Road. Randburg is an area located in the Gauteng province of South Africa. Formerly a separate municipality, its administration devolved to the newly created City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, along with neighbouring Sandton and Roodepoort, in the late 1990s. During the transitional period of 1996–2000, Randburg was part of the Northern Metropolitan Local Council (MLC).
The Western Bypass is a section of the N1 and the Johannesburg Ring Road located in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Known at the time as the Concrete Highway, the freeway was initially opened in 1975 as a route to avoid the city centre of Johannesburg and to provide access to the western areas of the Witwatersrand. From the south, the Western Bypass begins at the Diepkloof Interchange in Soweto, where it splits from the N12 freeway and ends at the Buccleuch Interchange, where it merges with the N3 Eastern Bypass, M1 South and N1 Ben Schoeman freeways.
The R24 is a major East-West provincial route in the Gauteng and North West provinces that links OR Tambo International Airport with Rustenburg via Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg. The process of renaming the streets and freeway that form the route from Krugersdorp eastward to OR Tambo International after anti-apartheid stalwart Albertina Sisulu was completed in 2013.
The M2 is a major highway and metropolitan route in Greater Johannesburg, South Africa. It is named the Francois Oberholzer Freeway. It runs just to the south of the Johannesburg Central Business District eastwards where it connects with the N3 and enters Germiston, ending near its CBD. The north–south M1 intersects with the M2 just to the south-west of the Johannesburg CBD.
