MSG Prime Minister's Cup

The MSG Prime Minister's Cup, formerly known as Melanesia Cup, is an association football championship played between the Melanesian countries, it was used (along with the Polynesia Cup) for qualification to the Oceania Nations Cup. The original tournament used a round-robin format involving every team playing each other once at the tournaments location.

Contents

In 2008, the Wantok Cup was established as a competition between Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. It was described by the Oceania Football Confederation as "a tournament reminiscent of the now defunct Melanesian Cup". [1]

In 2022 the tournament was revived under the current name, the MSG Prime Minister's Cup, after more than twenty years. [2]

The Wantok Cup was an international football competition between the national teams of three Melanesian countries: Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The Cup was to be a thrice-a-year competition, to be held in July (twice) and September (once), as part of independence commemoration celebrations in the Solomons, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea, respectively. The inaugural edition of the Cup was held during independence celebrations in the Solomon Islands, from July 3 to July 7, 2008, and was won by the hosts.

The 2017 FIBA Women's Melanesian Basketball Cup was an international basketball tournament contested by nations of the newly formed Melanesia FIBA Oceania sub-zone. Matches were played at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre. It was officially launched on 19 May 2017.

The 2023 MSG Prime Minister's Cup was held from 8–15 October 2023. New Caledonia hosted the competition with matches being played at the Stade Numa-Daly Magenta in Nouméa and the Stade Yoshida in Koné.
