The Faculty of History is one of the faculties of the Moscow State University. Established at 1934 on the base of the Historical-philological faculty of the university. The dean of the faculty was Sergey Karpov (since 1995 to 2018).

History

The first departments of the history, arts and archaeology of the Moscow State University were established at 1804. In 1835, the Department of History was separated into the Department of Russian History and the Department of Foreign History. The department of Russian History was led by Mikhail Pogodin, Sergei Solovyov, Vasily Klyuchevsky, the department of foreign history was led by Timofey Granovsky. At 1850 the historical-philological faculty was created.

After the October Revolution the Faculty of history and the Faculty of law were mixed into the Faculty of social sciences. At 1925 it was reorganized into a Faculty of Soviet Law and Ethnology. At the 1931 the Historical-philological faculty was transformed into Moscow Institute of Philology, Literature and History  [ Wikidata ].

At 1934 the Faculties of history in Moscow State University and in Saint Petersburg University were restored.

Sergey Pavlovich Karpov is a leading Russian Byzantinist who specializes in the Empire of Trebizond and the history of Gazaria. His work in Italian archives helped bring to light the records of Genoese and Venetian notaries and accountants concerning their Black Sea colonies. Some of his monographs are available in Italian translation. He was awarded a State Prize in 1996 and was elected into the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2003. Karpov was Dean of the Department of History of the Moscow State University from 1995 until 2015.

Father Sergei Mikhailovich Solovyov was a Russian Symbolist poet, religious philosopher and an Orthodox priest. Solovyov was a grandson of the historian Sergey Solovyov, a nephew of the poet and philosopher Vladimir Solovyov, second cousin of Alexander Blok, and a friend of Andrei Bely.

The Higher Courses for Women in Moscow was a university for women between 1872 and 1918, after which they were transformed into the 2nd Moscow State University. It was one of the largest and most prominent women's higher education institutions in the Russian Empire, second only to the Bestuzhev Courses in Saint Petersburg. It was founded and administered by Vladimir I. Guerrier.
