MS Tor Hollandia was built in 1966 and launched and christened by Godother Huck Van Rietscoten. She was introduced on the Tor Line service from Immingham to Amsterdam and Gothenburg. She was operated under three additional names (Ariadne, Ouranos, and F Diamond), before being sold for scrap in 2010. [1]
The ship was built as yard number 559 by Lübecker Flender-Werke Lübeck, West Germany. She was 138.00 metres (452 ft 9 in) with a beam of 21.50 metres (70 ft 6 in) and a draught of 5.50 metres (18 ft 1 in). She was powered by a Pielstick 12PC2V-400 diesel engine of 18,390 kilowatts (24,660 hp) which drove a single screw propeller. It could propel the ship at 24.0 knots (44.4 km/h; 27.6 mph). [2]
As built, she could carry 980 passengers and had 472 cabins. She could carry 300 cars. [2]
Tor Hollandia was launched on 12 November 1966 by Huck van Rietschoten, her sponsor. She was delivered to Tor Line on 12 April 1967. Her port of registry was Gothenburg, Sweden and the IMO Number 6704402 was allocated. [2] She entered service on 17 April 1967 providing passenger service between Immingham, United Kingdom, Amsterdam, Netherlands and Gothenburg, Sweden. [3] In 1975 she was due to be sold to an Arab shipping company with which Tor Line would co-operate. She was to have been called Saudi Moon and operate between Jeddah and Suez. However, the negotiations dragged on over time and a Greek shipping company, Minoan Lines became interested and bought her in October 1975. She was renamed Ariadne. She was reflagged to Greece, with Heraklion as her port of registry. [2] Under this new career she served for the next 24 years sailing on almost all of Minoan's routes. [4] In 1991, she was rebuilt to provide more cabin space. After rebuilding she was assessed at 11,621 GT and 2,250 DWT. She could carry 1,620 passengers in 556 cabins, and could carry 280 cars. In 1997, she was chartered by the General National Maritime Co., Tripoli, Libya for service between Tripoli and Valletta, Malta. [2]
In 1999, Ariadne was sold to Fragmar Shipping Co., Valletta, Malta. She was reflagged to Malta, and renamed Ouranos, entering service on the Corfu, Greece - Brindisi, Italy route. In January 2001, Ouranos was sold to F Lines Inc, Majuro, Marshall Islands. She was renamed F Diamond on 16 February 2001, but her registry remained with Malta. [2]
A late nickname for the ship was "Black Diamond", after it was painted black. The ship served as a party ship in Genoa after it was detained there for eight days on 9 October 2008, after inspection found 21 deficiencies; the party ship use caused local controversy. [1] In June 2010, F Diamond was sold by auction to Cemsan Gemi Sokum, Aliağa, Turkey, which planned to use her as a floating hotel. She was sold in September 2010 to Turkish shipbreakers and was renamed Diamond. She arrived at the shipbreakers on 11 September. [2]
Minoan Lines is one of the largest passenger ferry companies in Europe, and one of the dominant passenger ferry companies in Greece, sailing between Piraeus and Crete and in the Adriatic Sea, between Patras and various Italian ports. The company was founded in May 1972. Since 2008 Grimaldi's Compagnia di Navigazione SpA owns and controls 95.9 of the stock of Minoan Lines.
The Tor Line was a freight shipping company. Together with its subsidiaries, the Tor Line operated a fleet of approximately 65 ro-ro, ro-pax and lo-lo ships, primarily on the North and Baltic Seas. It was ultimately purchased by Denmark-based DFDS, which renamed it DFDS Tor Line, and it operated as a freight-carrying division of DFDS along with DFDS Lisco, DFDS Lys Line and DFDS Container Line before retiring the brand.
MS Moby Otta is a cruiseferry, currently owned by the Italy-based shipping company Moby Lines and operated on their Genoa–Olbia service. She was built in 1976 by Flender Werke, Lübeck, West Germany as MS Tor Scandinavia for Tor Line. Between 1991 and 2006 she sailed as MS Princess of Scandinavia.
The European Mariner was a ro-ro freight ferry owned by P&O Irish Sea.
SS Empire Aden was a 7,308 ton steamship which was built in 1945 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), she was sold in 1948 becoming Etivebank, and sold in 1956 and renamed Alcyone Fortune. In 1958 she was sold to Panama and renamed Northern Venture serving until running aground off Okinawa in 1967.
SS Culross was a 7,331 ton cargo ship which was built as Empire Antigua in 1945. She was renamed Culross in 1946. In 1960 she was renamed Akastos, serving under a number of flags until 1968 when she was renamed Marina, being scrapped in that year.
MS Ancona was a car-passenger ferry owned by Blue Line International and operated on it service linking Ancona in Italy to Split, Croatia. She was built in 1966 by Lindholmens varv in Gothenburg, Sweden, for Rederi AB Svea as MS Svea. As Svea, she was used on the joint Sweden–United Kingdom service operated by Ellerman's Wilson Line, Swedish Lloyd and Rederi AB Svea. In 1969 Svea was sold to Swedish Lloyd and renamed MS Hispania. In 1972, she was renamed MS Saga. In 1978, she was sold to Minoan Lines following the closure of Swedish Lloyd's passenger services and renamed MS Knossos. In 1998, she passed to Diler Lines, becoming their MS Captain Zaman II. In 2003, she was sold to Blue Line and was renamed Ancona. She was sold for scrap in October 2010 and breaking up was commenced on 15 December 2010.
Helliar is a ferry owned by Caledonian Maritime Assets and operated by NorthLink Ferries. Built by Astilleros de Huelva in Spain in 1997 as Lehola for the Estonian Shipping Company she has served a number of owners and operators as RR Triumph and Triumph before her sale to Clipper Group and being renamed Clipper Racer. In 2011, she was chartered to NorthLink Ferries and renamed Helliar.
Pompeji was a 2,917 GRT cargo ship which was built in 1939 by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany. She was seized as a war prize in 1945 and renamed Empire Blackwater. Ownership passed to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and then the United States Maritime Commission (USMC). In 1949 she was sold to a Danish company and renamed Krusaa. She was sold in 1960 to a Finnish company and renamed Krucia and later Helvi. In 1969 she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Eastern Faith. She was scrapped in 1975.
Empire Boy was an 859 GRT coastal tanker which was built in 1941 for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Completed in December 1941, was transferred to the Dutch Government in 1942 and renamed Doorman. In 1947, she was sold into Dutch merchant service and renamed Flandria. In 1952, she was sold to a West German company and renamed Alice. She was lengthened in 1954 and renamed Hammonia and was later renamed Petra. In 1962, she was sold to an Italian company and renamed Anny. A new engine was fitted in 1965 and she was renamed Tosco in 1971, serving until scrapped in 1975.
Gripfast was a 2,852 GRT coaster which was built in 1941 as Empire Brook for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into civil service in 1946 and renamed Stancliffe. She ran aground in 1948 and was declared a constructive total loss, having broken her back. Despite this, she was repaired and saw further service as Gripfast, Capetan Costas P, Karine M and Pitsa before sinking when under tow on 6 December 1967.
Avrasya is a Ro-Ro ferry that was hijacked in the Black Sea hostage crisis of 1996. Originally built in 1953 as the passenger ship Lazio, she was converted to a Ro-Ro ferry in 1967. In 1979, she was sold to Greece and renamed Sant Andrea. A sale in 1984 saw her renamed Makedonia, followed by a chartering in 1985 which saw her renamed Summer Star. A sale in 1986 saw her renamed Corfu Diamond and after a further sale in 1988 she was renamed Larnaca Rose. In 1992, she was sold to Panama and was renamed Avrasya. Following the hijacking incident, she was renamed Cortina, then Avrasya I in 1997. She was sold for scrapping in November 1997.
The M/F Sporades Star is a passenger ferry which belongs to Seajets. She was previously owned by Moby Lines and was named Moby Love. She was launched in 1972 as Saint Eloi but not completed until 1975 due to the bankruptcy of the shipyard that built her. She was built as a multi-purpose ferry, capable of carrying railway rolling stock as well as road vehicles.
Cambridge Ferry was a 3,294 GRT train ferry that was built in 1963 for the British Railways Board. She was sold to Malta in 1992 and renamed Ita Uno. She was renamed Sirio in 1993 and reflagged to Panama in 1998. The ship was scrapped in Turkey in 2003.
Speedlink Vanguard was a 3,514 GRT train ferry which was built in 1973 as Stena Shipper. She was charted to a New Zealand operator on completion and renamed Union Wellington and saw further service as Alpha Express and Stena Shipper before entering service with Sealink as Speedlink Vanguard. The ship was involved in a collision with European Gateway in 1982, which sank the latter ship with the loss of six lives.
Vortigern was a 4,797 GRT combined train and roll-on/roll-off ferry built by Swan Hunter in 1969 for the British Railways Board. She was sold to Greece in 1988 and served until 2004 under the names Milos Express, Express Milos and Nisos Lemnos. She was renamed Limon in 2004 and reflagged to Saint Vincent & the Grenadines. Limon was scrapped in 2005.
Yewforest was a 1,047 GRT coaster that was built as Empire Fenchurch in 1945 by John Lewis & Sons Ltd, Aberdeen for the Ministry of Transport (MoT). She was sold in 1946 and renamed Yewforest. She was sold to Guernsey in 1954 and renamed Perelle. Sold for scrapping in 1961, she was converted to a barge in 1962 and was in service as Tor in 1965.
Aghia Thallassini was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Brünhilde in 1943 by C. Van der Giessen & Zonen's Scheepswerfen NV, Krimpen aan den IJssel, Netherlands for Hamburg-Südamerikanische Dampfschifffahrts-Gesellschaft, Hamburg, Germany. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Game. She was sold in 1947 and was renamed Canford. Sold to West Germany in 1956, she was rebuilt and renamed Fangturm. She was sold to the Lebanon in 1961 and was renamed Panaghia Lourion. She was sold in 1967 to Greece and was renamed Aghia Thassalini. Sold to Cyprus in 1970, she served until 1973, when she was scrapped.
Salamanca was a Hansa A Type cargo ship which was built as Äolus in 1944 by J Cockerill SA, Hoboken, Belgium for Netptun Line, Hamburg. She was seized as a prize of war in 1945, passing to the Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Witham. She was sold to Hong Kong in 1948 and was renamed Choysang. A further sale in 1861 saw her renamed Milford. She was sold to Panama in 1967 and was renamed Salamanca. She was scrapped in 1971.
Bowbelle was a suction hopper dredger which was built in 1964 for F. Bowles & Sons Ltd, Cardiff, Glamorgan, United Kingdom. In 1989, she collided with, and sank, the pleasure steamer Marchioness, resulting in the loss of 51 lives. She was sold to Gibraltar in 1992 and was renamed Billo. She was sold to Portugal in 1996 and renamed Bom Rei. She foundered off Madeira in March 1996 with the loss of all hands.
