MV Ampere is the world's first battery electric car ferry, operating between Lavik and Oppedal in Norway. It is owned and operated by Norled, and crosses the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. [3] [4]
MV Ampere is the world's first battery electric car ferry, developed and built in Norway. Its development was the result of a competition, launched by the country's Ministry of Transport and Communications in 2011, to develop an environmentally friendly ferry service between the two villages. [4]
It is reported that she avoids the use of one million litres of diesel annually and offsets 570 t of carbon dioxide and 15 t of nitrogen oxide emissions compared to a conventional ferry on the same route. [4]
MV Ampere has 260 ft twin hulls constructed from aluminum to minimise weight. She is propelled by Rolls-Royce Azipull thrusters, powered by two 450 kW electric motors with batteries. The 10 t lithium-ion batteries were developed by Corvus Energy and integrated by Siemens with an overall output of 1,000 kWh. They can be recharged in 10 minutes between crossings from high-capacity batteries at each port. [2]
Other energy saving features are LED lighting, solar panels and air conditioning with a waste heat recovery system. [4]

Ytre Oppedal is a village and ferry terminal in Gulen Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It lies on the shores of the Oppedalsvika inlet along the south side of the Sognefjorden, east of where the Risnefjorden empties into the Sognefjorden. The village lies on both sides of the river Oppedalselva, which flows directly to the ferry port. The village of Brekke lies west of Ytre Oppedal, on the opposite side of the Risnefjorden.
Lavik is a village in Høyanger Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) north of the city of Bergen and about 50 kilometres (31 mi) west of the municipal center of Høyanger. Lavik is situated about 40 kilometres (25 mi) west of the villages of Kyrkjebø and Austreim, and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) southwest of the village of Vadheim. In 2001, the Lavik area had a population of about 1000 people, with about 285 living in the village of Lavik.
MV Catriona is a pioneering diesel electric hybrid passenger and vehicle roll-on, roll-off ferry built for Caledonian MacBrayne for the Claonaig–Lochranza crossing. She is the third hybrid ferry commissioned and owned by Caledonian Maritime Assets, one of three such ferries in the world to incorporate a low-carbon hybrid system of diesel electric and lithium ion battery power.
