On the night of July 8, 2003, MV Nasrin-1 was traveling on the Meghna River near Chandpur. The ferry was reportedly carrying around 750 passengers, far exceeding its capacity. [4] Around midnight, the vessel encountered severe weather conditions, which contributed to its capsizing and eventual sinking. Eyewitnesses reported that the ferry was hit by strong winds and waves, leading to a sudden and catastrophic loss of stability. [5]
Rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident was reported. The Bangladeshi Navy, Coast Guard, and local fishermen participated in the search and rescue efforts. Despite their efforts, only 220 passengers were rescued. [6] The strong currents and poor visibility hampered the rescue operations. Over the following days, rescuers recovered bloated bodies floating downstream, and many more were feared to be trapped inside the sunken ferry. [7]
The MV Nasrin-1 disaster was one of the deadliest ferry accidents in Bangladesh's history. The exact number of casualties remains uncertain, but estimates suggest that several hundred people lost their lives. [8] The disaster highlighted the chronic issues of overloading and inadequate safety measures in Bangladesh's ferry services.
In the aftermath, the Bangladeshi government and various maritime authorities vowed to implement stricter safety regulations and improve enforcement. However, subsequent incidents have indicated that ferry safety remains a significant concern in the country. [9]
In 2017, the High Court of Bangladesh ordered compensation amounting to Tk 171 million (approximately USD 2 million) for the victims of the MV Nasrin-1 disaster. The court upheld a lower court's verdict, emphasizing the need for accountability and compensation for the victims' families. [10] [11]
Bangladesh has a long history of ferry accidents, often attributed to overcrowding, poor maintenance, and lax enforcement of safety regulations. The country's rivers are vital transportation routes, but the ferry services are frequently marred by such tragic incidents. Efforts to improve safety standards have been ongoing, but challenges persist. [12]
MV Le Joola was a Senegalese government-owned roll-on/roll-off ferry that capsized off the coast of The Gambia on 26 September 2002, with 1,863 deaths and 64 survivors. It is thought to be the second-worst non-military disaster in maritime history.

The sinking of MV Teratai Prima occurred on 11 January 2009, around 04:00 local time when a ferry carrying more than 300 people capsized in the Makassar Strait off West Sulawesi, Survivors stated that the ferry had been slammed by 4-metre (13 ft) waves twice. The first one hit so hard that the ship became unbalanced, before another wave hit from a different direction and sank the vessel.
MVCoco-4 was a ferry that sunk near Bhola Island, Bangladesh on 27 November 2009, killing 75 people, out of more than a thousand on board, with several dozen more reported missing.
MV Rabaul Queen was a passenger ferry owned by the Papua New Guinea company Rabaul Shipping. The ship, built in Japan in 1983, operated on short runs in that country, before being brought to Papua New Guinea in 1998 and plying a regular weekly route between Kimbe, the capital of West New Britain, and Lae, the capital of the mainland province of Morobe.
The MV Shariatpur 1 was a double deck ferry that capsized in March 2012 after colliding with a cargo ship on Bangladesh's Meghna River, killing 147 people.
On 30 April 2012, a ferry carrying about 350 passengers capsized in the Brahmaputra River in the Dhubri district of Assam in Northeast India. The disaster killed at least 108 people.
The ferry MV Sewol sank on the morning of April 16, 2014, en route from Incheon towards Jeju in South Korea. The 6,825-ton vessel sent a distress signal from about 2.7 kilometres north of Byeongpungdo at 08:58 KST. Out of 476 passengers and crew, 304 died in the disaster, including around 250 students from Danwon High School in Ansan City. Of the 172 survivors, more than half were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene approximately 40 minutes before the Korea Coast Guard (KCG).
MV Sewol was a South Korean vehicle-passenger ferry, built and previously operated in Japan. She operated between Incheon and Jeju. On 16 April 2014, Sewol capsized and sank with the loss of 304 passengers and crew.

MV Dongfang zhi Xing was a river cruise ship that operated in the Three Gorges region of inland China. On the night of 1 June 2015, the ship was traveling on the Yangtze River when it capsized during a thunderstorm in Jianli, Hubei Province with 454 people on board. On 13 June, 442 deaths were confirmed, with 12 survivors. The passengers were mostly in their 60s and 70s, and mostly from Nanjing, where the ship started its cruise.
MV Sinar Bangun sank on 18 June 2018 in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia, during its trip from Simanindo Harbour in Samosir Island to Tiga Ras Harbour in Simalungun Regency. The ferry was carrying 188 passengers and crew. After the sinking, authorities immediately deployed search and rescue personnel to the area. Twenty-one survivors were rescued, three bodies were found and 164 people were listed as missing and presumed dead.
MV Nyerere is a Tanzanian ferry that capsized on 20 September 2018 while travelling between the islands of Ukerewe and Ukara on Lake Victoria. The Tanzanian government have declared that 228 people died as a result of the capsizing while 41 could be rescued. The capsized ferry was successfully righted, retrieved and unloaded more than one week after the disaster.
The 1948 Gozo luzzu disaster occurred on 30 October 1948 when a luzzu fishing boat carrying passengers from Marfa, Malta to Mġarr, Gozo capsized and sank in rough seas off Qala, killing 23 of the 27 people on board. The incident occurred when the overloaded MV Shamia, a two-decker merchant ship ferry, sank while carrying about 1,000 - 1,500 people from Bhola to Dhaka during stormy weather conditions. Initial reports cited between 40 and 240 dead with 500 missing.
On 24 December 2021, the passenger ferry MV Avijan-10 caught fire on the Sugandha River, near the town of Jhalokati, in southern Bangladesh. The incident resulted in at least 40 deaths and more than 100 injuries. Several people were reported missing.
