Maana Patel (born 18 March 2000) [1] is an Indian backstroke swimmer from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Swimming career

Maana Patel started swimming when she was seven. [2]

Manna Patel, the first Indian female swimmer who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, will compete in the women's 100m backstroke event. [3] The 21-year-old swimmer suffered an ankle injury in 2019 and only made a comeback earlier this year. [3]

When she was 13, she clocked 2:23.41s in the 200m backstroke at 40th Junior National Aquatics Championship in Hyderabad breaking the national record of 2:26.41s held by Shikha Tandon at the Asian Age Group Championship in Tokyo in August 2009. [2] Maana has won gold medals in 50 backstroke and 200 metre backstroke also at the National Games. Maana has also won a gold medal in the 100 metre backstroke at the 60th National School Games (2015) breaking the national record in backstroke. [4]

She was selected for the Olympic Gold Quest in 2015. [2] [5] She had won the silvers in 50 metre, 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke; bronze in 50 metre free style; gold in 4×100 metre freestyle relay; 4×100 metre medley relay at the 12th South Asian Games (2016). [1]

Maana won 3 gold medals at the 72nd Senior National Aquatic Championships-2018. [6]

Maana won six medals (1 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze) at the 10th Asian Age-group Championships-2019 which was held in Bangalore. [7] [8]

As of October 2021 , she has won 32 international, 99 national medals with 31 national records. [9]

Personal life

She studied commerce at the Udgam School for Children, Ahmedabad. [2] She was coached by Kamlesh Nanavati at the Gujarat Vidyapeeth Swimming Centre. [10] [11] She currently trains at the Dolphin Aquatics in bengaluru under coach Nihar Ameen .

Luke Greenbank is an English professional swimmer who specialises in backstroke. A medalist in the 200 metre backstroke at the Olympic Games and the World and European championships, he also swam the first leg in the 2019 World and 2020 European Championship gold medal-winning Great Britain medley relay teams. He won a silver medal as lead-off for Great Britain in the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He won a gold medal as lead-off for England in the heats of the 4 x 100 metre medley relay for men at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Taylor Madison Ruck is a Canadian competitive swimmer. She won two Olympic bronze medals as part of Canada's women's 4×100 metre and 4×200 metre freestyle relay teams at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her eight medal performance of one gold, five silver, and two bronze tied her with three other athletes for the most all-time at a single Commonwealth Games, as well as making her the most decorated Canadian female athlete ever at a single Commonwealth Games. Masse is a two-time world champion in the 100 m backstroke, breaking the eight year old world record in the process, which she held until July 2018. Kathleen Mary Dawson is a Scottish backstroke swimmer. She won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in mixed 4 × 100 metre medley relay in a world record time. She is also the European champion at the 2020 Budapest Championships and holder of the European record in 100 m backstroke (58.08).

Margherita Panziera is an Italian swimmer. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in 100 m backstroke and 200 m backstroke. She is also a three-time European Champion in the 200 metre backstroke, winning in 2018, 2021, and 2022.

Regan Smith is an American competitive swimmer. As of 2022, Smith trains under Bob Bowman with the Arizona State University professional training group. She is the world junior record holder in the women's long course 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter backstroke and a former world record holder in the long course 100-meter backstroke and the 200-meter backstroke. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in three events representing the United States, winning a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly, and a silver medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay. At the World Aquatics Championships, she won individual gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke in 2019 and the 100-meter backstroke in 2022 and a relay gold medal swimming the backstroke leg of the 4x100 medley relay in 2023.

Kaylee Rochelle McKeown is an Australian swimmer and triple Olympic gold medalist. She is the world record holder in the long course 50 metre backstroke, 100 metre backstroke and both the long course and short course 200 metre backstroke. She won gold in both the 100 metre and 200 metre backstroke, as well as the 4×100 metre medley relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics staged in Tokyo in 2021. In 2023, she was named as the "Best Female Swimmer of the Year" by World Aquatics, after sweeping gold in all three events of backstroke at all three World Cup legs, held in Berlin, Athens and Budapest in October, 2023.

She has won 4 World and European championships gold medals, competed at 2 Olympic finals, broken most of the Israeli national records for women and mixed relays, and is considered to be Israel's greatest swimmer of all time.

Anastasiya Shkurdai is a Belarusian swimmer. She won the bronze medal in the women's 200 metre backstroke event at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships held in Qatar. She won a gold medal at the 2019 European Short Course Swimming Championships held in Great Britain.
