Madeleine Boll (born 8 July 1953) is a Swiss former footballer who played as a midfielder for Sion, Boll represented the Switzerland national team. [1] [2] [3]

Biography

Boll interest in football at began an early age, where she joined FC Sion's youth team at the age of 12. In 1965, she took part in a match between Sion and Turkish club Galatasaray in the European Cup Winners' Cup. [4] The media coverage of the match resulted in Boll having her licence to play football in Switzerland withdrawn since the Swiss Football Association didn't realise Boll was female. [5]

At the age of 17, Boll took the opportunity to play in professional football in where she played for five years, first in signed with Gommagomma. [6] Her performances in Serie A gained her the nickname "Montagna blonda" ("The Blond Mountain"). [7] In 1975, Boll returned to Switzerland to play for the FC Sion, winning the Swiss Women's Cup in 1977. [8] Boll during her playing days was nicknamed the White Pele. [9]

Hermann Geiger was a Swiss aviator and search and rescue pilot whose heroic actions gave him national hero status in Switzerland. Known as "The Glacier Pilot," he pioneered the art of landing his Piper PA-18 on glaciers in the Swiss Alps like no other. In over 600 rescue missions, he managed to land his specially modified aircraft under extreme conditions on snow-covered glaciers. He often had to carry the injured people by himself in subzero temperatures and blizzard conditions to get them safely aboard his plane. Geiger once said, "To save lives, you must risk your own". He died from injuries suffered in a fatal collision with a glider at the age of 52. In aviation history, Geiger is the first man to successfully land on a glacier and one of the first mountain rescuers.

Switzerland participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "The Last of Our Kind" written by Christina Maria Rieder, Mike James, Jeff Dawson and Warne Livesey. The song was performed by Rykka, which is the artistic name of singer Christina Maria Rieder. The Swiss entry for the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden was selected through the national final ESC 2016 – die Entscheidungsshow, organised by the Swiss German speaking broadcaster Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF) in collaboration with the other broadcasters part of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation. Artists that were interested in entering the Swiss national final had the opportunity to apply to one of three open selections with defined submission periods organised by SRF together with the Swiss-Romansh broadcaster Radiotelevisiun Svizra Rumantscha (RTR), the Swiss-French broadcaster Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS) and/or the Swiss-Italian broadcaster Radiotelevisione svizzera (RSI). A total of 19 entries were selected to advance to an "Expert Check" round; ten entries were selected from the SRF/RTR selection, six entries were selected from the RTS selection and three entries were selected from the RSI selection. The "Expert Check" was held on 6 December 2015 and involved four experts evaluating the live performances of the 19 entries and selecting six entries to advance to the televised national final—three artists and songs from the SRF/RTR candidates, two from the RTS candidates and one from the RSI candidates. The six finalists performed during the national final on 13 February 2016 where a combination of jury voting and public voting ultimately selected "The Last of Our Kind" performed by Rykka as the winner.
