The Madison Square Garden Open Tennis Championship [1] [2] also known as the Madison Square Garden Challenge Trophy [3] and New York Indoor [1] was a men's and women's open international indoor carpet court tennis tournament founded in 1968. It was organised by the USNLTA and played at Madison Square Garden, New York City, United States until 1970. This international tournament was part of the ILTF World Circuit until 1970 when it was replaced Clean Air Classic. [4]
On 25 March 1968 the Madison Square Open Tennis Championship was established. [1] The tournament was organised by the USNLTA and was played on indoor carpet courts. The first two editions were played in the standard tournament format, the 1970 and final edition was played as a round robin tournament with a 3rd and 4th place play off then a final. [5]
In 1971 the owners of Madison Square Garden chose not to renew the tournament and the US tennis Association looked for a replacement New York Indoor event, they approached Combustion Equipment Associates Inc to sponsor a new event this lead to the Clean Air Classic that would be played across three venues in Hawthorne, New Jersey and the Vanderbilt International Raquet Club, culminating in the final at the Seventh Regiment Armory. Arthur Robert Ashe Jr. was an American professional tennis player. He won three Grand Slam titles in singles and two in doubles. Ashe was the first black player selected to the United States Davis Cup team, and the only black man ever to win the singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open. He retired in 1980.
Clark Graebner is a retired American professional tennis player.
George Clifford Richey Jr. is an American former amateur and professional tennis player who was active during the 1960s and 1970s. Richey achieved a highest singles ranking of World No. 6 and reached at least the quarterfinal stage of the singles event at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Charles Manuel Pasarell Jr. is a Puerto Rican former tennis player, tennis administrator and founder of the current Indian Wells tournament. He has also commented for the Tennis Channel and with Arthur Ashe and Sheridan Snyder formed the National Junior Tennis League. He was ten times ranked in the top ten of the U.S. and No. 1 in 1967 and world No. 11 in 1966. Representing the United States as a player, he has been heavily engaged in the administration of the professional game from the inception of the ATP in 1972 and has been Vice President when he was still playing and until recently on the Board of Directors representing the Americas tournaments. In 2013, Pasarell was elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
The 1970 Pepsi-Cola Masters was a tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan. It was the first edition of the year-end Masters Grand Prix and was held from December 9 through December 15, 1970. The event included a singles and doubles draw, both of which were held in a round robin format. Stan Smith won the first singles title and then partnered Arthur Ashe to the doubles title as well.
The 1974 Australian Indoor Championships was a men's professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney, Australia. It was part of the 1974 Commercial Union Assurance Grand Prix circuit as a Group A category event. It was the second edition of the tournament and was held from 13 October through 20 October 1974. First-seeded John Newcombe won the singles title.

The Phoenix Thunderbird Open was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1952 as Phoenix Thunderbird Championships Invitational. Also known as the Phoenix Thunderbird Invitational it continued as a joint event until 1970 when the men's event was discontinued. In 1971 the women's tournament was re branded as the Virginia Slims Thunderbird Classic that event continued until 1980.
The 1972 Clean Air Classic was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament with the final played at the Seventh Regiment Armory in New York in the United States. It was sanctioned by the Eastern Lawn Tennis Association but was not part of the official Men's Grand Prix or Women's Tennis Circuit. The Clean Air Classic was a replacement tournament for the earlier indoor tournament the Madison Square Garden Challenge Trophy.
