The Filmfare Best Director Award is one of the main awards presented given by the annual Filmfare Awards to recognise directors working in Hindi cinema. It was first presented in 1954 in the inaugural year.
The Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor is given by Filmfare as part of its annual Filmfare Awards for Hindi films, to recognise a male actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role. Although the awards started in 1954, awards for the best supporting actor category started only the following year 1955. As of 2016, Pran, Amrish Puri, Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Anil Kapoor lead the list, with three wins each. Vivek Oberoi currently also holds the record of being the youngest recipient of the award, whereas Rishi Kapoor holds the record for being the eldest, while Abhishek Bachchan holds the record for winning the award thrice consecutively.

Rakesh Roshan is an Indian film producer, director, screenwriter, and actor who works in Hindi films. He is the son of Indian music director Roshan and Indian Bengali singer Ira Roshan. He had appeared in 84 films throughout the 1970s and 1980s until 1989. As an actor, he was mostly known for his supporting roles in big-budget films starring Sanjeev Kumar and Rajesh Khanna in the lead role. Later, he achieved fame for directing films with titles beginning with the letter "K" since 1987. As a filmmaker, his most notable work includes the drama Khudgarz (1987), the revenge drama Khoon Bhari Maang (1988), the comedy-drama Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), the crime thriller Karan Arjun (1995), the romance Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000), the science fiction Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) and the superhero Krrish film series (2006—2013). Rakesh won the Filmfare Award for Best Director for directing the films; Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and Koi... Mil Gaya.

Salim Khan wrote the story and script. The film was a critical and commercial success and was declared a "Hit" at the box-office. It is based on the 1987 movie Someone to Watch Over Me. Meenakshi Sheshadri and Sangeeta Bijlani were both nominated at the Filmfare awards, in the Best Actress and the latter in the Best Supporting category.
