Mahomed Solomon Navsa (born 24 May 1957) is a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and its Acting Deputy President in 2015. [1] [2]
Navsa was born in 1957 in Edenvale,Gauteng. He studied at the University of the Western Cape,where he obtained a BA degree in 1978 and an LLB degree in 1980. He was heavily involved in setting up and running the community law clinic.
Navsa was admitted to the Bar in 1981 and subsequently took up employment at the Legal Resources Centre for fourteen years. He was director of the Johannesburg office from 1990 to 1994. [1] In September 1994 he was granted senior counsel and shortly thereafter was appointed as an Acting Judge of the Supreme Court. Navsa was appointed to the bench in the Transvaal Division of the Supreme Court on 1 July 1995. [3]
He was appointed to the bench of the Supreme Court of Appeal with effect from 9 December 2000 and acted as Constitutional Court judge during 2008. [2] During 2015,Navsa acted as the deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. [4]
The Constitutional Court of South Africa is a supreme constitutional court established by the Constitution of South Africa,and is the apex court in the South African judicial system,with general jurisdiction.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA),formerly known as the Appellate Division,is the second-highest court of appeal in South Africa below the Constitutional Court. The country's apex court from 1910 to 1994,it no longer holds that position,having been displaced in constitutional matters by the Constitutional Court in 1994,and in all matters by 2013. It is located in Bloemfontein. Bloemfontein is often,and has been traditionally referred to,as the "judicial capital" of South Africa because of the court,although the Constitutional Court is based in Johannesburg.
The Chief Justice of South Africa is the most senior judge of the Constitutional Court and head of the judiciary of South Africa,who exercises final authority over the functioning and management of all the courts.
Ismail Mahomed SCOB SC was a South African lawyer who served as the Chief Justice of South Africa and the Chief Justice of Namibia,and co-authored the constitution of Namibia.
Pius Nkonzo Langa SCOB was Chief Justice of South Africa,serving on the Constitutional Court. He was appointed to the bench in 1994 by Nelson Mandela,he became Deputy Chief Justice in 2001 and was elevated as Chief Justice in 2005 by Thabo Mbeki. He retired in October 2009. He served as the Chancellor of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University from 2006 to 2010. He died in 2013 at the age 74 and following a long illness.
Lex Mpati is a South African retired judge who was the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa from August 2008 to May 2016. He was appointed to the bench in February 1997 as a judge of the Eastern Cape Division and he joined the Supreme Court as a puisne judge in December 2000. Before his elevation to the presidency,he was the Supreme Court's first Deputy President from 2003 to 2008. He was also an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2007.
