Maialen Lujanbio (born 26 November 1976) is a Basque poet and bertsolari winner. She composes her oral poetry in the Basque language and she is the only woman to ever reach her level. [1] [2]
Lujanbio was born in Hernani in 1976. She took an interest in the Basque oral tradition of poetry whilst at secondary school. She attended specialist classes and continued to practise whilst at the University of the Basque Country. [3] She won prizes at the junior and then senior level introducing novel approaches to the poetry discipline. In 1994 she became the Champion of Gipuzkoa. [4]
In 2003 she wrote for the Basque newspaper, Berria, completing a column each day. [4]
In 2007-8 she took a postgraduate course at Mondragon University in the Basque language and its transmission. [4]
In 2009, Maialen Lujanbio Zugasti became the first woman to win the championship. [3] In 2013 she was second just after Amets Arzallus and in 2017 and 2022 she won for the second and third time the Bertsolari Main Championship. [5]

Hernani is a town and municipality located in the province of Gipuzkoa, Basque Autonomous Community, Spain. The town sits on the left bank of the Urumea river. It is located at a distance of 9.2 km from San Sebastián. The municipality of Hernani occupies an area of approximately 40 square kilometres and is bordered by San Sebastián, Astigarraga, Arano, Elduayen, Errenteria, Lasarte-Oria and Urnieta.
Bertsolaritza or bertsolarism is the art of singing improvised songs in Basque according to various melodies and rhyming patterns. Bertsos can be composed at a variety of occasions but are performed generally by one or various bertsolaris onstage in an event arranged for the purpose or as a sideshow, in homage ceremonies, in benefit lunches and suppers, with friends or at a competition. Such a sung piece of composition is called a bertso, the person who sings it is called a bertsolari and the art of composing bertsos is called bertsolaritza in Basque. Traditionally these were sung by men but there is an increasing number of young female bertsolaris today.
Joan Antonio Mogel Urkiza (1745–1804) was a Basque writer of the 18th century and author of one of the most important pieces of Basque classical literature, Peru Abarka, the first novel written in that language. Finished by the author in 1782, this book was not published until 1880 — in installments that came out in a newspaper. In 1881, it was published as a book for the first time.

Women in the Basque Nationalist Party in Francoist Spain were involved in leadership positions from an early period. The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) was founded prior to the Second Spanish Republic in Bilbao, as a conservative Roman Catholic organization. Casilda Iturrizar, also known as the Epalza widow, was a Spanish philanthropist and businessperson from Bilbao in the Basque Country. Iturrizar sought to help the most disadvantaged members of Bilbao society using her fortune for charity. The street where she lived, a hospital wing, and a city park were named after her.
Bingen Zupiria is a Spanish politician affiliated with the Basque National Party. As of 25 June 2024, he serves as Minister of Security in the Basque Government led by Imanol Pradales. He previously served as Minister of Culture and Language Policy in the Second Urkullu Government (2016-2020) and the Third Urkullu Government (2020-2024), serving under Iñigo Urkullu.
