Majenta is a studio album by American electronic musician Jimmy Edgar, released in 2012 on Hotflush Recordings. It met with a mixed reception, with Resident Advisor writing that it "quite possibly represents Edgar's most full-blooded work yet." [4]

Critical reception

Magenta received some acclaim from music critics while other reviews were mixed. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 59 based on eight reviews, indicating "mixed or average reviews". [1] Majenta received 4/5 stars from the publication Resident Advisor , with the reviewer writing that "Jimmy Edgar has found a new home at Hotflush, but not a whole lot has changed in his purple-hued world of robot decadence. Majenta is scantily clad in the same skeletal synth funk, though it was apparently conceived in a passionate flurry of creativity rather than the belaboured nature of his previous works... it's a tighter record that struts and gyrates in a more assured fashion than the sprawling XXX , and quite possibly represents Edgar's most full-blooded work yet." [4] In a positive review of Majenta for the BBC, Rich Handscomb focused on the erotic elements of the album, writing that "as difficult as it is to take Edgar seriously at times, so earnest is he about his sexualised sonic seercraft that resistance is futile." [2]

James Edgar is an American musician and creative director from Detroit, Michigan. Influenced by Detroit techno, Rap and R&B, early in his career he released two hip-hop glitch albums under the names Michaux and Kristuit Salu and Morris Nightingale. His first solo album Color Strip (2006) came out on Warp Records after he signed to the label at age 18. This release was followed by XXX (2010) on !K7 Records in 2010. After his last solo LP Majenta (2012), he has released several EPS on his own Ultramajic Records, often designing the album covers with Pilar Zeta.

Hotflush Recordings is a British record label. Founded by electronic musician Paul Rose, the label has released music by Scuba, Mount Kimbie, Boxcutter, Vaccine, Joy Orbison, Untold and many more.

Boxcutter is the pseudonym for Barry Lynn, an electronic musician from Northern Ireland. Early Boxcutter material from 2005 and 2006, like that released on Hotflush Recordings and on the debut Planet Mu album Oneiric, was frequently associated with the genre dubstep, although it was also compared to experimental artists such as Amon Tobin and Boards of Canada. The second Boxcutter album Glyphic was more influenced by classic dub music such as King Tubby, but also drew comparisons to artists such as Squarepusher, Foul Play and Seefeel, and continued Lynn's reputation for working outside of conventions and taking a genre-hopping approach. In 2009, Lynn released the SETI-themed album Arecibo Message. In the same year, he also founded the Kinnego Records label, on which he released a collaboration with Kinnego Flux featuring artwork by London designers La Boca, and the first vinyl single by Space Dimension Controller.
