Biography

She insisted that she was a studious girl during her childhood and she paid firm attention on her studies to gain good grades at college entrance examinations. [1] She pursued both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Laws. She hails from Karnataka. [2]

Career

She developed an ardent interest and passion towards adventure sports during her 30s. [1] After making a career-defining move by venturing into adventure sports, she broke the stereotypes pertaining to the patriarchal mindset that has been incorporated within the typical traditional South Indian family backdrop, where girls are generally groomed only for education and marriage. [1] In 1984, she had applied to enroll in a trekking program in Chandrakhani, Himachal Pradesh. [1] She then agreed for a low-altitude programme organised by the Youth Hostels Association of India. [3] Her decision to join the trekking program at that time marked a significant milestone in her career aspirations towards fulfilling her goals of exploring the adventure. [1]

She then joined the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling in 1986. She successfully climbed 12 mountain ranges in India including Stok Kangri, and Mount Kilimanjaro. [4] She also engaged in running marathons to enhance her fitness levels and she also began practicising karate as part of her physical training activities. As of 2024, she had established a significant track record of having completed a record tally of 26 full marathons and two ultra-marathons across the world in her lifetime. [5]

She set a new record by becoming the first Indian woman to complete the Antarctica Ice Marathon & 100k ultra race. She also successfully competed in the 2011 edition of the Everest Base Camp Marathon. [1] At the age of 62, in April 2015, she made ambitious efforts to realize the dream of conquering Mount Everest. [6] However, due to a deadly fatal earthquake which rocked the entirety of Nepal, claiming the lives of over 8000 people, her planned expedition was called off, thereby putting an end to her goal of reaching the summit of Mount Everest. [7] She nearly missed out on setting a new record of being the oldest male or female Indian to successfully climb Mount Everest. [8] In an exclusive to The Better India, she recalled the memories of her gearing up for Mount Everest summit in April 2015 and she insisted that she was reading a book inside the dining tent, at the time when tremors struck the area. [3] The earthquake was a vital blow for herself in terms of finance, as she spent INR 23 lakhs for the preparation. [3]

Rhys Jones is an English mountaineer and was the youngest person to climb the Seven Summits, and reached the summit of Mount Everest.

Arunima Sinha is an Indian mountaineer and sportswoman. She is also a seven time Indian volleyball player. Before Arunima, Rhonda Graham from USA world's first female amputee climbed Mount Everest in October 2011.

Malavath Poorna is an Indian mountaineer. On 25 May 2014, Poorna climbed Mount Everest, aged 13 years and 11 months, the youngest female to have reached the summit. Purna climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe on 27 July 2017. After reaching the summit of Elbrus, Poorna unfurled a 50 ft long Indian Tricolor and sang the Indian National Anthem. She completed the Seven Summits on 5 June 2022 climbing Denali, along with father-daughter duo Ajeet Bajaj and Deeya Bajaj.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Malli Mastan Babu</span>

Mastan Babu Malli was an Indian mountaineer. He is best known for his 2006 world record of climbing the Seven Summits in the shortest span of time at that point - a total of 172 days with the first climb on 19 January 2006 and the seventh on 10 July 2006. This feat made him the first Indian and South Asian to climb all seven summits, the first Indian to climb Vinson Massif and the first Indian to climb Carstensz Pyramid. While his record for climbing the seven summits has since been improved upon, his record of attaining each summit on a different day of the week still stands today.

Anshu Jamsenpa is an Indian mountaineer and the first woman in the world to scale the summit of Mount Everest twice in a season, and the fastest double summiter to do so within five days. She is from Bomdila, headquarters of West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh - the state that holds the most north-eastern position in India. Ashish Mane is a professional climber from India. He has scaled Mount Everest (2012), Lhotse (2013), Makalu (2014), Manaslu (2017), and Kanchenjunga (2019). Ashish is the only climber from Maharashtra as of now, to ascend five of the fourteen eight-thousander peaks over 8,000 meters (26,250ft) above sea level. In 2016, he attempted to climb Dhaulagiri, but due to technical reasons he had to quit the expedition.
