Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) is the national youth orchestra of Malaysia. The goal of this youth orchestra is to inspire young Malaysian musicians to appreciate orchestral music and to create a pool of well-trained musicians, particularly in classical music.

The first round of auditions were held on 6 May and 6 June 2006. About 500 young instrumentalists aged between 14 and 26 attended the auditions from all across Malaysia. 110 were selected into the newly formed youth orchestra in 2006. [1]

The MPYO performs a wide-ranging of music genre, mainly classical music from the symphonic to commissioned works by Malaysian composers. Todate, it has a total of 106 musicians, participating in concerts, workshops and training throughout the year. [2] [3]

The MPYO made its debut concert at the Petronas Philharmonic Hall on 25 August 2007, led by its first principal conductor, Kevin Field. [4]

Simon Rattle British conductor

Sir Simon Denis Rattle is a British conductor. He rose to international prominence during the 1980s and 1990s, while music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1980–1998). Rattle was principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic from 2002 to 2018. He is currently music director of the London Symphony Orchestra, since September 2017. Rattle is also the patron of Birmingham Schools' Symphony Orchestra, arranged during his tenure with CBSO in mid 1990s. The Youth Orchestra is now under the auspices of charitable business Services for Education.

David Hattner is an American professional clarinetist and conductor currently serving as music director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Raised in Toledo, Ohio, Hattner attended the Interlochen Arts Camp and Arts Academy, experiences which inspired him to become a professional musician and conductor. He graduated from the Arts Academy in 1986 and enrolled in Northwestern University where he studied clarinet performance under Robert Marcellus. In 1988 he placed second in the International Clarinet Association's Young Artist Competition and was selected to join the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra. He earned a music degree with honors in 1990.
