Mandana Moghaddam is an Iranian-Swedish contemporary visual artist whose installation work was most notably exhibited in the 51st Venice Biennale. Affected by the Iranian Revolution, Moghaddam was granted asylum in Gothenburg, Sweden where she continues to work to this day. Her work covers such themes as alienation, communication, and gender. Working with these themes, Moghaddam creates works that attempt to bridge cultural boundaries, inspire intercultural dialogue, and memorialize oftentimes contentious aspects of Iranian life.

Early life and education

Mandana Moghaddam was born in Tehran in 1962. At the age of 17, the Islamic Republic came to power in a revolution that later led to her father's execution as a member of the Shah's army. She was raised in the often hostile environment of Tehran, and was in her early twenties during the majority of the Iran–Iraq War (1980–88). Her education was disrupted and as a result of hostile conditions, she was forced to flee the country.[ citation needed ]

Influences

Moghaddam's exposure to unrest, strong nationalism, violence, and instability the Iranian revolution was to have great effect on Moghaddam's later works, as well as her own sense of identity. Moghaddam's later installations, specifically Sara's Paradise (2009), show that Moghaddam finds her identity not only in the memory of her country and people, but in a global sense of unity and reconciliation. This she reflects and promotes in her works, as an inspiration to dialogue, healing, and good will. In doing so Moghaddam recovers the broken sense of self and identity tied to her early years. Chelgis Series (2005)

The Chelgis series, based on an Iranian fairy tale, works with hair as a symbol of the experience of a woman in contemporary Iranian culture. The series is realized in five parts, each part utilizing a different medium and perspective on the locus of the series, hair. Moghaddam's use of natural hair in the installation is significant for creating a connection with her audience. She reveals hair as inextricably linked to gender and socially-held beliefs of beauty. According to ancient persian ideals, hair should be long, thick, and a rich raven color. She focuses on this ideal that Arabic women are expected to live up to. Even in modern Iranian culture women are obliged to cover their hair, preserve it, and keep it beautiful for their husbands. Works like her Chelgis installations overturn prototypical views of hair and women's relationship to their hair. Moghaddam controls the audience's view of hair in her art, revealing it as symbolic of the female plight, tied up with years of oppression and forced ideals, or even a symbol of liberation when cut off. The Well (2008)

Moghaddam seeks reconciliation, rebirth, and hope through dialogue resulting from her works. Her installation, The Well, seeks to do so on an international scale. First premiered in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 25 September 2008, "The Well" is an ongoing project designed to be installed in different cities around the world. It was created to reflect the traditional scene of social interchange on an international scale by creating two connected wells in two very different countries. As evidenced in videos of audiences interacting with the wells, these installations serve as a curious attraction and an intriguing means of conversation for people who might never be engaged otherwise. Moghaddam's installation involves the construction of well structures in which are placed audio feeds to another well in another country. They serve to bridge international barriers in the simple action of establishing communication. In this way the well shows that people can come together despite political, religious, or cultural distance and boundaries. [4]

Sara's Paradise (2009)

Sara's Paradise was first exhibited in the Brot Kunsthalle Gallery in Vienna, [5] eventually moving to the gallery Arario New York. The show which contained the piece was entitled The Promise of Loss: A Contemporary Index of Iran, and was curated by Shaheen Merali. Merali described the exhibition as:

... a consolidation of many dashed hopes, a desire to build a shrine as well as to plant trees in the campus condemned to destruction. The artists enable both a reading of the situation and encouragement to cross the distance where the bitterness of loss reigns within the national moral. The Promise of Loss is organized to mine the huge ground of Iran. The connection of expertise to experience, the rhythm of its measures and the constancy of the artistic gaze into its shadows has made listening to the artists’ renditions more urgent. [6]

Moghaddam's work is meant to promote reconciliation through a serious message of massacre and memorialization. It was created as an ode to the martyrs of the Iran–Iraq War, whose lives are commemorated in the Behesht e Zahra cemetery in Tehran.

The over 800,000 young lives taken in the war are represented in the installation by a central basin, out of which bleeds and bubbles a continuous stream of red water. [7] The blood serves to represent these martyrs, lured to death by the promise of a place in paradise. The empty containers and barrels that surround the basin represent the eventual draining Iran's resources, notably their oil reserves. The containers are lit from within by a green light that simultaneously represents the modern green movement in Iran as well as hope and goodwill for Iran's future.

His earlier works tackle global issues of war and terrorism and its representation and manipulation by politics and the media. Santhosh's sculptural installation "Houndingdown" was exhibited in Frank Cohen collection ‘Passage to India’. Some of his prominent museum shows are ‘Aftershock’ at Sainsbury Centre, Contemporary Art Norwich, England in 2007 and ’Continuity and Transformatuseum show promoted by Provincia di Milano, Italy. He lives and works in Mumbai.

Farideh Lashai was an Iranian painter. She was born in Rasht, Iran. She was also a writer and translator. Her foremost book is Shal Bamu. She is renowned for her abstract contemporary paintings, which are a combination of traditional and contemporary views of nature.

Anne Wilson (artist)

Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist. Wilson creates sculpture, drawings, Internet projects, photography, performance, and DVD stop motion animations employing table linens, bed sheets, human hair, lace, thread and wire. Her work extends the traditional processes of Fiber art to other media. Wilson is a professor in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Virginia Agyeiwah Nimarkoh is a British artist and activist, based in London. Nimarkoh was born in London, and studied at Goldsmiths College London from 1986 to 1989, graduating with a PhD in Fine Art. Her practice combines mostly photographic and curatorial projects. She also works in community development and environmental regeneration initiatives across London. She currently works mainly with food, running a raw food business and food insecurity social enterprise in London.

Haleh Jamali is an Iranian artist currently living and working in Scotland. She works with a wide range of media and techniques that include painting, photography, installation, video, and performance. She completed her Bachelors of Arts in Painting at the College of Fine Arts, University of Tehran, in 2005. In 2007, she received her MA in Art and Media Practice from the University of Westminster, London. Her works focus on the hidden layers beneath the visible by using the media of painting and installation.

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian Iranian artist

Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian was an Iranian artist and a collector of traditional folk art. She is noted for having been one of the most prominent Iranian artists of the contemporary period, and she was the first artist to achieve an artistic practice that weds the geometric patterns and cut-glass mosaic techniques (Āina-kāri) of her Iranian heritage with the rhythms of modern Western geometric abstraction. In 2017, the Monir Museum in Tehran, Iran was opened in her honor.

Shirana Shahbazi is an Iranian-born photographer who now lives in Switzerland. Her work includes installations and large prints of conceptual photography.

Sanaz Mazinani is an Iranian–Canadian multidisciplinary visual artist, curator and educator, known for her photography and installation art. She is currently based in San Francisco and Toronto.

Parastou Forouhar is an Iranian installation artist who lives and works out of Frankfurt, Germany. Forouhar’s art reflects her criticism of the Iranian government and often plays with the ideas of identity. Her artwork expresses a critical response towards the politics in Iran and Islamic Fundamentalism. The loss of her parents, Dariush and Parvaneh Forouhar fuels Forouhar’s work and challenges viewers to take a stand on war crimes against innocent citizens. Forouhar's work has been exhibited around the world including Iran, Germany, Russia, Turkey, England, United States and more.

Shirin Aliabadi was an Iranian contemporary multidisciplinary visual artist whose work focused on women's issues, gender representation, and the beauty industry. She is best known for depiction of rebellious Iranian women in her Girls in Cars and Miss Hybrid series of photographs.

Shaheen Merali

Shaheen Merali is a Tanzanian writer, curator, critic, and artist. Merali began his artistic practice in the 1980s committing to social, political and personal narratives. As his practice evolved, he focused on functions of a curator, lecturer and critic and has now moved into the sphere of writing. Previously he was a key lecturer at Central Saint Martins School of Art (1995-2003), a visiting lecturer and researcher at the University of Westminster (1997-2003) and the Head of the Department of Exhibition, Film and New Media at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2003-2008). A regular speaker on ideas of contemporary exhibition making internationally, in 2018 he was the keynote speaker at the International Art Gallery of the Aga Khan Diamond Jubilee Arts Festival, Lisbon.

Ramin, Rokni, Hesam are a Dubai-based artist collective from Iran, consisting of Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh and Hesam Rahmanian who's working and living together described as a project, since 2009.
