Manish Singh (born 5 May 1991) [4] is a male Indian racewalker. He competes in the 20 km and the 50 km events and is employed by the Uttarakhand State Police. He has been part of the Indian racewalking squad for the past 3 years.

Racewalking athletic discipline

Racewalking, or race walking, is a long-distance discipline within the sport of athletics. Although it is a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. This is assessed by race judges. Typically held on either roads or on running tracks, common distances vary from 3000 metres (1.8 mi) up to 100 kilometres (62.1 mi).

He competed in the 50 kilometeres walk event at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, China. [5] Manish Singh also completed his 20 km race in 1 hour 20 minutes and 50 seconds at the IAAF Race Walking challenge in April 2015.

The fifteenth edition of the IAAF World Championships was held 22–30 August 2015 in Beijing, China. 43 nations won medals, 144 of which were awarded. Kenya topped the medal table for the first time, with 7 gold, 6 silver and 3 bronze medals. The United States won 18 medals, six gold, six silver and six bronze, which was the highest tally. Host nation China, finished 11th on the medals table, while Russia finished ninth.

He is a landless agriculture labourer from Uttarakhand who has also worked as a waiter for a living. [6]

He is currently being supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme. [1]

The GoSports Foundation (GSF) is an independent, donor-funded [non-profit] venture, working towards securing funds and professional expertise for some of India's junior Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Established in 2008 with the singular purpose of injecting professionalism and positivity into the sports environment in India, it has worked with numerous athletes from across multiple Olympic and Paralympic disciplines through its scholarship programmes.

Career

Born in a family of modest means, Manish walked 7 km each way to school. [6] He secured his berth for the Rio Olympics after making the qualification mark, clocking 1:22:50, at the IAAF Racewalking Challenge, finishing 9th. [7]

At the Rio Olympics, Manish finished a commendable 13th in the 20km race walking category ahead of higher ranked opponents. [8]
