Connecticut is the southernmost state in the New England region of the United States. As of the 2010 Census,it has the highest per-capita income,second-highest level of human development behind Massachusetts,and highest median household income in the United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east,Massachusetts to the north,New York to the west,and the Long Island Sound to the south. Its capital is Hartford and its most populous city is Bridgeport. Historically the state is part of New England as well as the tri-state area with New York and New Jersey,which together make up metropolitan New York City. The state is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state. The word "Connecticut" is derived from various anglicized spellings of "Quononoquett" (Conanicut),a Mohegan-Pequot word for "long tidal river".

The Godavari and the Krishna are the two major rivers in the state. Marathi is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state. The forest cover in the state is 16.47% of the state's geographical area. Out of the total cultivable land in Maharashtra,about 60% is used for grain crops with Jowar being the dominating crop.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a scheduled passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that was shot down on 17 July 2014 while flying over eastern Ukraine. All 283 passengers and 15 crew were killed. Contact with the aircraft,a Boeing 777-200ER,was lost when it was about 50 km (31 mi) from the Ukraine–Russia border,and wreckage of the aircraft fell near Hrabove in Donetsk Oblast,Ukraine,40 km (25 mi) from the border. The shoot-down occurred in the War in Donbas in an area controlled by pro-Russian rebels.
