This was the nation's sixth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1984 Summer Olympics. The British Virgin Islands delegation included only one athlete, meaning the country, along with Brunei and Liechtenstein, sent the lowest number of athletes to the 2004 Summer Games. The athlete selected was sprinter Dion Crabbe, an athlete who qualified for the Olympics by meeting the "A" standard time required for his event, the men's 200 meters. Crabbe was also selected as flag bearer for the opening ceremony. He did not progress beyond the heats, meaning the British Virgin Islands won no medals at this Summer Olympics.

It was the lowest number of participants for Guatemala since the 1980 Games in Moscow, USSR. Three of the twelve athletes were taking part in their second Olympics, and one of them, race walker Luis García, participated in his fourth. In any event that involved a progression through rounds, the Guatemalan athletes did not advance past the first round; as of the Beijing Olympics, there had yet to be a Guatemalan medalist. At the opening ceremony, badminton player Kevin Cordón bore Guatemala's flag.

Alexander failed to progress through the heats whilst Harrigan-Scott was eliminated in her event's quarterfinals.
Susan Marie Rojcewicz is an American former basketball player who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. After culminating her college career at Southern Connecticut State University in 1975, Rojcewicz became a physical education instructor and assistant basketball coach at Penn State University. Rojcewicz was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
The United States Virgin Islands (USVI) sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics held in Sochi, Russia from 7–23 February 2014. This marked the return of the Virgin Islands to the Winter Olympics after missing the 2010 edition, and was their sixth time competing at a Winter Olympic Games. The USVI team consisted of one athlete in alpine skiing, Jasmine Campbell. She finished 56th in the giant slalom and 43rd in the slalom.

Clifton Charleswell is a former boxer who represented the United States Virgin Islands. He competed in the men's light welterweight event at the 1984 Summer Olympics. At the 1984 Summer Olympics, he lost to David Griffiths of Great Britain.
Jacobo Garcia is a boxer who represents the United States Virgin Islands. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics and the 1996 Summer Olympics.
