Marcia Gumpertz

Marcia Lynn Gumpertz is an American statistician known for her research on agricultural statistics, spatial analysis, the design of experiments, and plant disease epidemiology. [1] She has also studied employment issues for women and members of underrepresented minorities in science and technology. [2] [3] She is a professor of statistics at North Carolina State University. Education and career

Gumpertz earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973, and a master's degree in statistics from Oregon State University in 1979. [5] She completed her Ph.D. at North Carolina State University in 1989. Her dissertation, Simple Estimators for the Linear Random Coefficient Regression Model and the Nonlinear Model with Variance Components, was jointly supervised by Sastry Pantula and John Rawlings. [6]

She worked as a scientist for Northrop Services Inc., in Oregon, from 1980 to 1984, [5] doing research for the Environmental Protection Agency, [1] and joined the North Carolina State University on completing her doctorate in 1989. [5] At North Carolina State University, she has also served as assistant vice provost for faculty diversity. [1] [7]

Book

With Francis G. Giesbrecht, Gumpertz is the co-author of the book Planning, Construction, and Statistical Analysis of Comparative Experiments (Wiley, 2004). [8]

Recognition

Gumpertz was president of Mu Sigma Rho, the US national statistics honor society, for 2004–2006. She was elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2006, and given the Distinguished Achievement Award of the American Statistical Association Section on Statistics and the Environment in 2008. Carol Anne Gotway Crawford is an American mathematical statistician and from 2018 to 2020 served as Chief Statistician of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). She joined the GAO in May 2017. From August 2014 to April 2017, she was with the Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service. She was formerly at the National Center for Environmental Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also holds an adjunct faculty position at the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, and is an expert in biostatistics, spatial analysis, environmental statistics, and the statistics of public health. She also maintains an interest in geoscience and has held executive roles in the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences.

Patricia Clark Kenschaft was an American mathematician. She was a professor of mathematics at Montclair State University. She is known as a prolific author of books on mathematics, as a founder of PRIMES, the Project for Resourceful Instruction of Mathematics in the Elementary School, and for her work for equity and diversity in mathematics.

Sharon Lynn Lohr is an American statistician. She is an Emeritus Dean’s Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Arizona State University, and an independent statistical consultant. Her research interests include survey sampling, design of experiments, and applications of statistics in education and criminology.
