Maree Toombs

Maree Toombs is a Euralayie and Kooma woman from north-western NSW and a researcher in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, particularly mental health and respiratory disease. Her work emphasises the importance of co-design, and she is editor of the book Indigenous Australians and Health: The Wombat in the Room, which guides health professionals working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. [1] She is Professor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in the UNSW School of Population Health, and Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney. [2] [3]

Education and career

Leaving school without completing Year 12, Toombs re-entered formal education through a bridging program for Aboriginal people at the University of Southern Queensland. After five years as a teacher, she returned to run the program and developed an interest in improving Aboriginal student retention rates. She completed her PhD on the wellbeing of students at university, becoming the first Aboriginal woman to graduate with a PhD from the University of Southern Queensland. [4]

In 2019, Toombs became Associate Dean (Indigenous Engagement) in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland. A priority in this role was developing cultural humility in the Faculty so that doctors could work in culturally safe and appropriate ways thus improving health outcomes for Indigenous peoples. [5]

In 2024, Toombs was appointed Professor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in the UNSW Faculty of Health and Medicine. She will work with the faculty's Aboriginal Sovereign Strategy Group to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing Unit, ensuring cultural safety is embedded in the Faculty's work. Retention of Indigenous university students

Toombs' PhD research explored the barriers and enablers of Indigenous student success, [7] the social and emotional well-being of Indigenous students, [8] students' mental health issues and how they relate to university experience, [9] and identity and belonging at university. [10] In 2011, she received a Churchill Fellowship to study the role resilience plays in retention rates of Indigenous students in Canadian universities. [11] Because resilience featured strongly as an enabler of success, and in a sprit of reciprocity to her research subjects, Toombs developed a resilience training package that could be used in high schools and universities. [12]

The MOB van

In 2013, identifying a need to provide culturally appropriate primary health services to underserved Aboriginal communities, she was involved in the commissioning of a mobile clinic, the MOB (Mobile Outreach Boomerang) Van, to provide health services in the Toowoomba and Southern Darling Downs regions through Carbal Medical Services. The van has also served as an education and research facility, providing training to health professionals and a safe and private place for research data collection. [13] [14]

Indigenous Suicide Intervention Skills Training (I-ASIST) protocol

In 2014, Toombs received funding under an NHMRC Mental Health Targeted Call for Research to develop a training program and smartphone app to prevent Indigenous youth suicide. [15]

Applying learnings from the LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), [16] Toombs' team worked with almost 100 communities across Australia to develop I-ASIST, Australia's first Indigenous-led and designed suicide intervention training program. [17] The program trains people in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to identify people at risk of suicide and to provide appropriate support. Through two to three months of pre-training engagement with community and Elders, and ongoing support after the training, the program is tailored to community need and delivered in a culturally appropriate manner. In 2021, Toombs was awarded a Suicide Prevention Australia Living is For Everyone (LiFE) Awards for the program, [20] and in 2023, the Australian Mental Health Prize in the Professional category for I-ASIST. [21] The program has also been recognised internationally, in the United States, Canada, Ireland and African countries. [6]

Indigenous respiratory health

Toombs has also contributed to the development of co-design approaches to improve the respiratory health of Indigenous peoples through culturally safe care and the equitable distribution and prioritisation of resources. [22] She is a contributor to the Aboriginal Children’s Excellent (ACE) Lung Health Study, [23] Kids Easy Breathing Study, examining bronchiolitis and bronchiectasis in Indigenous children, [24] and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships to Prevent Permanent Lung Disease (APPLE) Study [25] at the Telethon Kids Institute. She has shared advice with clinicians to enable better outcomes for lung health in Aboriginal communities. [26]

The Wollotuka Institute is a unit within the University of Newcastle (Australia). It is a strategic and operational body which is responsible for all Indigenous activities of the University. The Institute was established in 1983 within the then Newcastle College of Advanced Education (NCAE) as a support program for Indigenous Australian students and was amalgamated into the University of Newcastle at the same time as the Hunter Institute of Higher Education. Wollotuka's all-Indigenous staff, overseen by an all-Indigenous Board of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and Training, make it unique among Australian higher education Indigenous units and well respecting throughout Australia. 'Wollotuka' means "eating and meeting place" in the Awabakal language. Links with the Awabakal people and their land have been cited as a factor attracting academics to the university.

Statistics indicate that Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders are much less healthy than other Australians. Various government strategies have been put into place to try to remediate the problem; there has been some improvement in several areas, but statistics between Indigenous Australians and the rest of the Australian population still show unacceptable levels of difference.

Thomas Edwin Calma, is an Aboriginal Australian human rights and social justice campaigner, and 2023 senior Australian of the Year. He was the sixth chancellor of the University of Canberra (2014-2023), after two years as deputy chancellor. Calma was the second Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person to hold the position of chancellor of any Australian university.

The Closing the Gap framework is a strategy by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments of Australia that aims to reduce disparity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians on key health, education and economic opportunity targets. The strategy was launched in 2008 in response to the Close the Gap social justice movement, and revised in 2020 with additional targets and a refreshed strategy.

Jody Broun is an Indigenous Australian artist and activist with a long-standing career, most recently with her current position being Chief Executive Officer of the National Indigenous Australians Agency. She has completed a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education and a Masters in Philosophy. In 1998 she was awarded first prize in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award for her artwork "White Fellas Come To Talk Bout Land" and in 2005 Broun was awarded first place in the Canberra Art Prize for her artwork "Half-Time Game". Along with these major awards Broun has displayed many artworks in solo and group exhibitions, winning many other awards, and grants. Broun is a Yindjibarndi woman with family connection from the Pilbara region in North Western Australia, and is known for her dedication to Indigenous communities in Australia.

Lisa Rae Jackson Pulver is an Aboriginal Australian epidemiologist and researcher in the area of Aboriginal health who has been Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Sydney since October 2018.

Lyn Henderson-Yates is an Aboriginal Australian social scientist professor and deputy-vice chancellor of the Broome campus of University of Notre Dame Australia in Western Australia. She is the first Aboriginal woman to be hired to this position in any university across Australia.

Paul Christopher Memmott is an Australian architect, anthropologist, academic and the Director of the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre at the University of Queensland. He is an expert on topics related to Indigenous architecture and vernacular architecture, housing, homelessness and overcrowding.

Patricia Lynette Dudgeon is an Aboriginal Australian psychologist, Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society, and a research professor at the University of Western Australia's School of Indigenous Studies. Her area of research includes Indigenous social and emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention. She is actively involved with the Aboriginal community, having an ongoing commitment to social justice for Indigenous people. Dudgeon has participated in numerous state and national committees, councils, task groups and community service activities in both a voluntary and professional capacity.

Vanessa Lee-AhMat is an Australian scholar who was the first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander PhD graduate from Griffith University School of Medicine. In 2005, Lee-AhMat was recognised by the Parliament of Australia for her dedication and commitment to Thursday Island community, in the Torres Strait.

Carbon Creative is an Indigenous-owned creative agency based in Brisbane, Australia. The agency was founded in 2006 and produces creative content "to help close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people" of Australia, shift perceptions of Indigenous communities that centre around negative stereotypes and economic and social disadvantage, and increase representation of First Nations Australians within Australian society.

Sandra Jan Creamer is a lawyer and Indigenous peoples' rights advocate from Mt Isa in Queensland, Australia. As of 2022 she is also adjunct professor of Public Health at the University of Queensland.

Bronwyn Fredericks is an Indigenous Australian academic and administrator. Her scholarship extends across education, health, community development, policy, and Indigenist research methods, including a focus on work relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people using participatory and community led approaches. Her contributions have been recognised through the NAIDOC Education Award in 2022 and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award in 2019. She is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor at the University of Queensland.
