Margaret Jane Masson is a British academic and the principal of St Chad's College at Durham University. [1]
Born and brought up in Zambia, [1] Masson studied at the University of Aberdeen,graduating with a double first undergraduate Master of Arts (MA Hons) degree in English and Religious Studies. [2] She undertook a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in the Department of English Studies at the University of Durham,under the supervision of Ruth Etchells. [2] Her doctoral thesis,titled "The influence of Congregationalism on the first four novels of D.H. Lawrence",was submitted in 1988. [3]
Masson began her academic teaching career in the United States,first at Whitworth College then at Calvin College,Grand Rapids,Michigan. [1] In 1992,she returned to Durham University,having been appointed Senior Tutor at St John's College and lecturer in the University’s English Department [4] [1] In 2004 she became the Vice-Principal and Senior Tutor at St Chad's College,Durham. [1] It was announced on 16 February 2016 that she would be the next Principal of St Chad's College in succession to Joseph Cassidy. [5] She was formally installed as the college's tenth Principal during a service at Durham Cathedral in May 2016. [6]
Masson was a board member and trustee of Traidcraft for many years,a member of the Leech Professorial Management Board,a member of the board of Ridley Hall,Cambridge,and is a Bishop's Reviewer for Ministerial Training in the Church of England. [2]
Masson is married to Robert Song,Professor of Theological Ethics at the University of Durham. They have two grown-up children. [7]
St John's College is one of the recognised colleges of Durham University. The college was established in 1909 as a Church of England theological college and became a full constituent college of the university in 1919. The college consists of John's Hall for students studying on any university course and Cranmer Hall,an Anglican theological college in the open evangelical tradition. All part time and distance learning postgraduate students reading for theology are automatically assigned to St John's. Started as a men's college,it was the first Church of England theological college to train men and women together,where it subsequently became mixed.
St Chad's College is one of the recognised colleges of Durham University. Founded in 1904 as St Chad's Hall for the training of Church of England clergy,the college ceased theological training in 1971 and now accommodates students studying the full range of Durham University courses. Its members are termed "Chadsians" and it is the smallest Durham college by number of undergraduates,but has extensive college library facilities and among the highest level of academic performance.
Van Mildert College is one of the 17 constituent colleges of Durham University. The college was founded in 1965 and takes its name from William Van Mildert,the last Prince-Bishop to rule the County Palatine of Durham and a leading figure in the university's foundation. He is the author of several books on the relationship between science and religion,and a regular contributor to Thought for the Day on BBC Radio 4. He has a PhD in astrophysics and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Since January 2015,she has been Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford;she is the first woman and first lay person to hold this appointment. She is a fellow of Christ Church,Oxford and an honorary fellow of Lady Margaret Hall,Oxford. On 27 April 2015,she was installed as a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral,Oxford. She was previously Professor of the History and Theology of the Latin West at Durham University.
