Maria van Daalen (born 8 July 1950) is a Dutch poet and writer. Maria van Daalen is a pseudonym of Maria Machelina de Rooij. [1]

She was born in Voorburg and studied at the VU University Amsterdam [1] and at the University of Iowa, where she also took part in the International Writing Program. [2] She has taught at the Schrijversvakschool in Amsterdam. [3]

The International Writing Program (IWP) is a writing residency for international artists in Iowa City, Iowa. Since 2014, the program offers online courses to a large number of writers and poets across the world. Since its inception in 1967, the IWP has hosted over 1,500 emerging and established poets, novelists, dramatists, essayists, and journalists from more than 150 countries. Its primary goal is to introduce talented writers to the writing community at the University of Iowa, and to provide for the writers a period of optimal conditions for their creative work. Since 2000, the IWP has been directed by poet and journalist Christopher Merrill.

She is also an expert on the subject of Vodou and, in 2007, was initiated as a Mambo Asogwe in Haiti. She was an advisor for an exhibit of Vodou art objects at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. [3]

Mambo is the term for a female priestess in the Haitian Vodou religion. The term is a creolization of the Fon term nanbo, which means "mother of bo (magic)." These priestesses are the heads of autonomous cult groups—rather than clerical hierarchies—and exert their authority over the devotees or spiritual servants in their temples. In Haitian Vodou temples, mambos are less commonly referred to as manman (mother), whereas those initiated into the temple are called "children of the house."
