The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Sarajevo '84, were a winter multi-sport event held between 8 and 19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. It was the first Winter Olympic Games held in a Slavic language-speaking country, as well as the only Winter Olympics held in a communist country before the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. It was the second consecutive Olympic Games held in a communist country, after the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.

The 1500 metres speed skating event was part of the speed skating at the 1956 Winter Olympics programme. The competition was held on naturally frozen ice on the Lake Misurina. It was held on Monday, 30 January 1956, started at 2 PM and ended at 4:05 PM. Fifty-four speed skaters from 18 nations competed.
Luiza Złotkowska is a Polish speed skater. She is an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, and held the Polish record on the 5000 m distance from February 2021 to December 2022.
Christopher John Nicholson is a New Zealand sportsman who has represented the country at both the Winter Olympics as a short track speed skater and at the Summer Olympics as a cyclist. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, and the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer. The only other New Zealander to compete at both the Summer and Winter Olympics is Madonna Harris.
Marie-France van Helden is a retired French speed skater. She competed at the 1988 Winter Olympics in 500 m and 3000 m and finished in 27th and 24th place, respectively. In 1980 she married Hans van Helden, a Dutch speed skater who later changed his nationality to French.
Jeanne Marie Omelenchuk was an American speed skater. She competed at the 1960, 1968 and the 1972 Winter Olympics. As a cyclist, she won the 1952 and 1955 amateur women's United States National Championship.
Benoît Lamarche is a Canadian speed skater. He competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics and the 1988 Winter Olympics.
