Commander Mark Raymond Tandy, CSC is an officer of the Royal Australian Navy. He was the Warrant Officer of the Navy from 2008 until 2012.

Early years

Tandy was born in Roebourne, Western Australia and educated in Tennant Creek and Darwin. He joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1982 as a radio operator. [1]

Tandy has served as either the Communications operator or supervisor at a number of establishments and ships of the Royal Australian Navy. [2] Shore postings have included HMAS Albatross (Nowra), HMAS Coonawarra (Darwin), HMAS Harman (Canberra), HMAS Cerberus (Western Port Bay), ADF Recruiting Unit (Townsville) and Strategic Headquarters (Canberra). [2] Sea postings have included HMAS Jervis Bay, HMAS Canberra, HMAS Cessnock, HMAS Warrnambool, HMAS Dubbo and HMAS Success. [2]

In December 2002, Tandy was promoted to warrant officer and assumed the role of Operations Officer at the Naval Communications Area Master Station Australia (NAVCAMSAUS) during the Second Gulf War. On exchange with the Royal Navy in 2005, he spent four months at HMS Collingwood as a lead instructor at the Command and Training Group. [2]

Tandy was selected to be the sixth Warrant Officer of the Navy in October 2008 and took up the appointment on 19 December 2008.

During July 2012 Mark stood down as the Warrant Officer of the Navy, joining a program which allowed him to become an officer. He was appointed to the rank of lieutenant commander and has since been the Executive Officer of Naval Headquarters, South Queensland.[ citation needed ]

Honours and awards

Tandy holds a Master in Maritime Studies degree from the Australian Command and Staff College at Weston Creek (2007).

In 2004, while posted as an instructor to the Royal Australian Naval College at HMAS Creswell, he received a Commanding Officer's Commendation, and a Navy Systems Command Quarterly Contribution award.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is the naval force of Australia. Following the Federation of Australia in 1901, the ships and resources of the separate colonial navies were integrated into a national force, called the Commonwealth Naval Forces; it was granted its current title in 1911. HMAS <i>Harman</i>

HMAS Harman is a Royal Australian Navy (RAN) base that serves as a communications and logistics facility. The main base is located in the Australian capital of Canberra, and is geographically recognised as the suburb of Harman in the District of Jerrabomberra. Established in the late 1930s as the Royal Australian Navy Wireless/Transmitting Station Canberra, the facility was commissioned into the RAN as a stone frigate in 1943. In addition to its communications and logistics roles, the base hosts reserve units from both the Australian Army Reserves and Royal Australian Air Force Reserves, as well as cadet units from all three branches of the Australian Defence Force Cadets.

Rear Admiral James Vincent Purcell Goldrick, is a naval historian, analyst of contemporary naval and maritime affairs, and a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy. He currently holds the position of fellow at the Sea Power Centre – Australia. He is also an adjunct professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in the University of New South Wales at the Australian Defence Force Academy and a member of the Naval Studies Group at the Australian Centre for the Study of Armed Conflict and Society, an adjunct professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre of the Australian National University and a professorial fellow of the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security at the University of Wollongong. He captained HMAS Parramatta on operations in the Persian Gulf from 2006 to 2007 during the Iraq War and commanded Combined Task Force 150, overseeing maritime counter-terrorism operations around the Arabian Peninsula and Horn of Africa, from 2011 to 2012. He served as Head of Navy Capability from 2015 to 2017, Commander Australian Fleet from 2018 to 2020, and was appointed Chief of Joint Capabilities in November 2020.
