Marquette Gymnasium is a gymnasium on the campus of Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, built in 1922. [1] The building was the first full-time home of the Marquette men's basketball team before they moved, originally part-time, to the MECCA Arena. In later years, the building served as a practice facility for the team, as well as the home of the women's basketball and volleyball teams before the completion of the Al McGuire Center. Currently, the building houses offices for the Intercollegiate Athletics department (including the Cross Country, Track, soccer, tennis and golf teams) and the school's Army and Naval ROTC departments. [2]
The building was traditionally known in the Marquette community as the "Old Gym." Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire and his Marquette men's basketball teams of the 1960s and 1970s (an era in which Marquette was a perennial NCAA tournament team and was often ranked in the top 10 of national polls) practiced almost exclusively in the Old Gym. Well known Marquette basketball players who played in the Old Gym home included George Thompson, Dean "The Dream" Meminger, Jim Chones, Bob Lackey, Maurice Lucas, Earl Tatum, Bo Ellis, Allie McGuire, Jerome Whitehead, Butch Lee, Sam Worthen, Doc Rivers, Tony Smith, Jim McIlvaine, Dwyane Wade and Travis Diener. Coaches include Tex Winter, Eddie Hickey, Al McGuire, Hank Raymonds, Rick Majerus, Kevin O'Neill, and Tom Crean.

It was built in 1937 on land bought by David Ross and George Ade as a replacement for Memorial Gymnasium to be the home of the Purdue basketball team, and also contained an indoor track. Memorial Gym was a 2,000 seat facility built in 1910 which had outgrown its usefulness, as the team had even resorted to playing games at the local high school gym, which seated twice as many as the gym did. In 1967, the team moved into the newly built Mackey Arena next door, and the building was remodeled to become a full-time track facility. The building also contains pool facilities, which were in use by the swimming and diving teams until 2001, when the Boilermaker Aquatic Center was completed.
The 1970 National Invitation Tournament was the 1970 edition of the annual NCAA college basketball competition. It was unique in that coach Al McGuire of 8th ranked Marquette University, unhappy with his team's NCAA tournament placement in the Midwest rather than the closer Mideast regional, turned down that bid and elected to play in the NIT instead. His Marquette Warriors went on to claim the championship, and as a result the NCAA now forbids its members from playing in other postseason tournaments if offered an NCAA bid.

During this period, it was also home to the University of Kentucky Men's Club Basketball team, University of Kentucky Club Dodgeball team, and the UK Men's Club Volleyball team.
