The Michigan Senate is the upper house of the Michigan Legislature. Along with the Michigan House of Representatives,it composes the state legislature,which has powers,roles and duties defined by Article IV of the Michigan Constitution,adopted in 1963. The primary purpose of the Legislature is to enact new laws and amend or repeal existing laws.
In U.S. politics,an independent Democrat is an individual who loosely identifies with the ideals of the Democratic Party but chooses not to be a formal member of the party or is denied the Democratic nomination in a caucus or primary election. Independent Democrat is not a political party. Several elected officials,including members of Congress,have identified as independent Democrats.
Hansen Hashim Clarke is an American politician and former U.S. Congressman. A Democrat,he was the U.S. representative for Michigan's 13th congressional district from 2011 to 2013. Prior to his election to Congress,he had been a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1991 through 1992 and from 1999 through 2002,and represented the 1st district in the Michigan Senate from 2003 to 2011. Clarke was also the first U.S. Congressman of Bangladeshi descent.
Martha G. Scott is an American politician serving as a member of the Wayne County Commission. She previously served as a Democratic member of the Michigan State Senate from 2001 through 2010,a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1994 through 2001. Her senate district included the northeast section of Detroit and the cities of Hamtramck,Highland Park,Harper Woods,and the five Grosse Pointes. She was term limited at the 2010 elections,and ran for the office of Wayne County Commissioner. She won election has since been reelected several times to the Wayne County Commission.
Irma Clark-Coleman is a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. She was a Democratic member of the Michigan Senate,representing the 3rd district from 2003 to 2010. Previously she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1999 to 2002.

Rick Outman is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Since 2019,he has been a member of the Michigan Senate,elected from the 33rd Senate district. He was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives,representing the 70th district,from 2011 to 2017. He was term limited out in 2017.

A member of the Democratic Party,she represents the 8th district;before that,from 2019 to 2023,she represented the 13th district,which included Berkley,Birmingham,Bloomfield Hills,Clawson,Rochester Hills,Royal Oak,and Troy,Michigan. Prior to running for the Michigan Senate,McMorrow worked in industrial design.
The 2024 United States Senate election in Michigan was held on November 5,2024,to elect a Class I member of the United States Senate to represent the state of Michigan. It was held concurrently with the 2024 United States presidential election,other elections to the U.S. Senate,elections to the U.S. House of Representatives,as well as various state and local elections. Democratic U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin narrowly defeated Republican former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers,in her bid to succeed Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow,who declined to seek a fifth term. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump carried Michigan on the same ballot.

Adam Hollier is an American politician who is the director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency,appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Hollier served in the Michigan Senate,representing the 2nd Senate district,serving Wayne County including Detroit,the Grosse Pointes,Hamtramck,Harper Woods,and Highland Park from 2018 to 2022.
Michigan's 8th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The current senator for the district is Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak.
The 2022 United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan were held on November 8,2022,to elect representatives for the thirteen seats in Michigan. The deadline for candidates to file for the August 2 primary was April 19. The congressional makeup prior to the election was seven Democrats and seven Republicans. However,after the 2020 census,Michigan lost one congressional seat. Democrats won a majority of seats in the state for the first time since 2008. This can be partly attributed to the decrease in the number of districts,which resulted in two Republican incumbents –Bill Huizenga and Fred Upton –in the new 4th district. Redistricting also played a part in shifting partisan lean of the districts which favored the Democrats overall,including in the 3rd district,which Democrats were able to flip with a margin of victory of 13 points. That was made possible by a non-partisan citizens' commission drawing the new political boundaries instead of the Michigan legislature after a 2018 ballot proposal was approved.
The 2024 United States House of Representatives elections in Michigan were held on November 5,2024,to elect the 13 U.S. representatives from the state of Michigan,one from each of the state's congressional districts. The elections coincided with the U.S. presidential election,as well as other elections to the House of Representatives,elections to the United States Senate,and various state and local elections. The primary elections took place on August 6,2024.
The 2026 Michigan gubernatorial election is scheduled to take place on November 3,2026,to elect the governor of Michigan. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist are term-limited and are ineligible to seek a third term. This will be one of five Democratic-held governorships up for election in 2026 in a state won by Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.
