Martha Layne Collins High School is a high school located in Shelbyville, Kentucky, United States and is a part of the Shelby County Public School District. Commonly referred to as Collins High School, the school is named after Martha Layne Collins, the first female governor of Kentucky and a Shelby County native. [3]

In 2015, Collins High School was deemed a Distinguished High School by the Kentucky Department of Education and its Biomedical Engineering Program became nationally accredited by Project Lead the Way. In 2014, Collins High School was named the 5th Most Challenging High School in the state of Kentucky by the Washington Post . [5] Also in 2014, the Culinary Department at Collins made the Hospitality 100 list released by Sullivan University honoring high schools across the country that excel in culinary arts. [6]

Colonel Martha Layne Collins is an American former businesswoman and politician from the Commonwealth of Kentucky; she served as the state's 56th governor from 1983 to 1987, the first woman to hold the office and the only one to date. Prior to that, she served as the 48th Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, under John Y. Brown, Jr. Her election made her the highest-ranking Democratic woman in the U.S. She was considered as a possible running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale in the 1984 presidential election, but Mondale chose Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro instead.

Shelby County High School is a public high school in Shelbyville, Shelby County, Kentucky. The school was established in 1960 and later absorbed Shelbyville High School, remaining the only high school in the district until the opening of Martha Layne Collins High School in 2010 to meet overcrowding concerns. The split of the school cut the school's population roughly in half.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association boys' and girls' state basketball championships are single elimination tournaments held each March featuring 16 high schools. Colloquially known as the Sweet Sixteen. Since 2019, both the boys' and girls' tournaments takes place over four days at downtown Lexington's Rupp Arena.
