Canton is a city in and the county seat of Lincoln County,South Dakota,United States. Canton is located 20 minutes south of Sioux Falls in southeastern South Dakota. Canton is nestled in the rolling hills of the Sioux Valley,providing an abundance of recreational activities with the Big Sioux River bordering the eastern side,Newton Hills State Park to the south,and Lake Alvin to the north. The city was named by Norwegian settler and former legislator James M. Wahl. The population was 3,066 as of the 2020 census.

Joel A. Swisher was an American college football coach and athletics administrator. He served as the head football coach at Dakota State University (1973–1976),Augustana College in Sioux Falls,South Dakota (1977–1980),Adams State College (1982–1983),and Jamestown College (1992–1994),compiling a career college football head coaching record of 65–55–4. Swisher was also the athletic director at Dakota State from 1974 to 1977.

He served as the head football coach at Upsala College in East Orange,New Jersey in 1947,Augustana University in Sioux Falls,South Dakota from 1948 to 1950,and Ripon College in Ripon,Wisconsin from 1956 to 1957. Thompson was also the head baseball coach at Augustana from 1950 to 1951.
