The AF2 was the Arena Football League's developmental league; it was founded in 1999 and played its first season in 2000. Like its parent AFL, the AF2 played using the same arena football rules and style of play. League seasons ran from April through July with the postseason and ArenaCup championship in August. The AF2 continued to operate while the AFL suspended operations for its 2009 season. The league was effectively disbanded in September 2009 when no team committed to playing in 2010, but several of the stronger franchises transferred into the reconstituted AFL.
The Austin Wranglers were an arena football team based in Austin, Texas. They played four seasons in the Arena Football League from 2004 to 2007 and spent one season in af2, the AFL's developmental league, in 2008. They made playoff appearances in the AFL in 2006 and in af2 in 2008. They played their home games at the Frank Erwin Center at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Corpus Christi Sharks were a 2007 expansion member of the AF2, an arena American football development league. They played their home games at the American Bank Center. Michael Trigg was the team's head coach. Trigg had been a head coach in the Arena Football League with the Milwaukee Mustangs, Grand Rapids Rampage and Philadelphia Soul, coaching the Rampage to victory in ArenaBowl XV. The Sharks folded in October 2009.

Robert Kent is an American football quarterback for the North Texas Bulls of the National Arena League (NAL). He played college football at Jackson State. He has also been a member of the Tennessee Titans, Montreal Alouettes, Birmingham/Alabama Steeldogs, Lubbock Renegades, Toronto Argonauts, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Abilene Ruff Riders, Houston Stallions, Corpus Christi Fury, San Antonio Talons, St. Louis Attack, Texas Revolution, Dallas Marshals, Monterrey Steel, Massachusetts Pirates, and Duke City Gladiators. He also was the head coach of the Duke City Gladiators in the Indoor Football League (IFL) for the remainder of the 2021 season.

One of twenty-five teams competing in the IFL for the 2010 season, the Corpus Christi, Texas-based Corpus Christi Hammerheads were members of the Lonestar East Division of the Intense Conference.

Johnny Ray Hatley was an American football player and coach, and rodeo performer. He played college football at Baylor, Corpus Christi, Southwest Texas JC and Sul Ross State and was selected in the 16th round of the 1953 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He played one season with the Bears before being traded to the Chicago Cardinals, where he played for two seasons. Hatley was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 1956 but did not play. He then retired from football to become a rodeo performer, winning several competitions and placing thirteenth at the 1959 National Finals. Hatley returned to pro football in 1960, being signed by the Dallas Texans and later being traded to the Denver Broncos. In 1961, he briefly had a stint with the New York Titans. From 1966 to 1969, he was a player, coach, executive, and administrator in the Texas Football League (TFL) with the Odessa-Midland Comets and Fort Worth Texans/Braves. Hatley was inducted into the Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2004.
The Corpus Christi Tritons are a future professional indoor football team based in Corpus Christi, Texas. They are current members of American Indoor Football and will play their home games at the American Bank Center starting in 2024. The team follows in the history of indoor football in the city with the now-defunct Corpus Christi Hammerheads/Fury, who played in several leagues between 2003 and 2016, the Corpus Christi Sharks from the af2 from 2007 to 2009 and the Corpus Christi Rage, who folded halfway through their lone season in the National Arena League in 2017.
