Martin Masai Andersen

Martin Masai Andersen (born 1972) is a Danish photographer, art director and designer, based in South London. [1] He also lectures at a number of universities. Andersen has made long-term documentary photography projects on football fans and dog shows, and made music videos for The Breeders, Lush and Iceage. His animation work has won a Clio Award and been shown in group exhibitions at Manchester Art Gallery and at SeaCity Museum in Southampton.

Life and work

Andersen grew up in Denmark and moved to London in 1993. [2] He earned a BA in visual communication design from Ravensbourne University London (1993–1996) and a MA in graphic design from the Royal College of Art in London (1996–1998). [3] [4]

Since 2000, in partnership with his sister Line Andersen, he has been creative director at Andersen M Studio in London [3] working in art direction, graphic design, photography, animation, film and music. His work there includes making the music videos for "Against the Moon" by Iceage, [5] [6] "Blind Spot" by Lush, [7] "Wait in the Car" by The Breeders, [8] [9] [10] and "12:36" by Lowly. [11] [12]

His documentary photography series and book, Can't Smile Without You, is about fans of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. [13] [14] [15] It was made between 2013 and 2017 "on the streets and in the pubs before and after" the team's football matches. [2] The title refers to the song "Can't Smile Without You", popularised by Barry Manilow in 1978, "which fans adopted as the club's anthem." [14] His documentary photography series Dog Shows, made between 2004 and 2019, is about international dog shows in North America and Europe. [16] [17]

Andersen is an associate lecturer on "art direction and graphic design concepts" on the BA Fashion Communication course at Central Saint Martins, School of Fashion, London [18] (2000– [3] ); senior lecturer at the University of Brighton School of Art; [3] and module leader at Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts [19] (2017– [3] ).

Nicholas David Gordon Knight is a British fashion photographer and founder and director of SHOWstudio.com. Vaughan Oliver was a British graphic designer based in Epsom, Surrey. Oliver was best known for his work with graphic design studios 23 Envelope and v23. Both studios maintained a close relationship with record label 4AD between 1982 and 1998 and gave distinct visual identities for the 4AD releases by many bands, including Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pale Saints, Pixies, and Throwing Muses. Oliver also designed record sleeves for such artists as David Sylvian, The Golden Palominos, and Bush.

Dame Sonia Dawn Boyce is a British Afro-Caribbean artist and educator, living and working in London. She is a Professor of Black Art and Design at University of the Arts London. Boyce's research interests explore art as a social practice and the critical and contextual debates that arise from this area of study. Boyce has been closely collaborating with other artists since 1990 with a focus on collaborative work, frequently involving improvisation and unplanned performative actions on the part of her collaborators. Boyce's work involves a variety of media, such as drawing, print, photography, video, and sound. Her art explores "the relationship between sound and memory, the dynamics of space, and incorporating the spectator". To date, Boyce has taught Fine Art studio practice for more than 30 years in several art colleges across the UK.

Thomas Wood is an Irish street photographer, portraitist and landscape photographer, based in Britain. Wood is best known for his photographs in Liverpool and Merseyside from 1978 to 2001, "on the streets, in pubs and clubs, markets, workplaces, parks and football grounds" of "strangers, mixed with neighbours, family and friends." His work has been published in several books, been widely shown in solo exhibitions and received awards. He has a retrospective exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool until 7 January 2024.

H5 is a French design and animation studio founded by Ludovic Houplain and Antoine Bardou-Jacquet in 1994. Under Houplain's art direction, H5's work can mostly be found in the fields of music videos and luxury advertising. Since 1999, H5 has also worked as a collective of directors. They also made their first animated clips, such as animated typography for Alex Gopher, a cartoon for Zebda, digital animations for Super Furry Animals and Playgroup.

Adam Chodzko is a contemporary British artist, exhibiting internationally. His practice uses a wide range of media, including video, installation, photography, drawing, and performance.
