Marty Costello is an American professional gridiron football coach who is the offensive line coach for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League (CFL). A former offensive lineman at Bemidji State, he has previously coached at several American colleges, including Truman State, Valley City State, and the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. [1] [2]
Costello is from Royalton, Minnesota. [3] He played college football as an offensive lineman for Bemidji State University from 1995 until a career-ending injury in 1998. [1] Following the injury, he moved into coaching as a student assistant on the Beavers’ staff, working with the offensive line. [1]
After his initial work as a student assistant at Bemidji State, Costello spent one season (2000) as the offensive line coach at Wisconsin–Oshkosh. He then returned to Bemidji State to complete his graduate work, serving as the Beavers’ running backs coach and strength coordinator. [1]
Costello later held a series of roles at small-college programs:
Costello joined Valley City State University in 2010. In his first season, he served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. From 2011 to 2013 he was promoted to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, while also working as the program’s strength coach, academic coordinator and camp coordinator. [1]
In 2014, Costello joined the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point as run game coordinator and offensive line coach; he also served as recruiting coordinator. [1]
Costello joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2016 as assistant offensive line coach under veteran offensive line coach Bob Wylie. [2] He was promoted to offensive line coach in 2017 and has held the role since then. [2]
With Costello overseeing the offensive line, Winnipeg has been widely regarded as one of the most dominant and consistent units in the CFL:
Costello enters his 10th season on the Blue Bombers staff in 2025 and his eighth as the club’s offensive line coach. [2]
Costello is a native of Royalton, Minnesota, and is an alumnus of Bemidji State University. [3]
