The Maryland Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is an American professional orchestra based in Hagerstown, Maryland.
The orchestra was founded in 1982 and led by its first conductor Barry Tuckwell. [1] Tuckwell was the artistic director until the 1997–98 season. The current music director, Elizabeth Schulze, formerly associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra, was appointed to the position in the 1999–2000 season. [2]
Just four classical concerts were performed in its inaugural season but today, programming has grown to include ten classical concerts, an “MSO Premium Pops!” concert, two “Home for the Holidays” concerts, and regional concerts at Frostburg State University and the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival. Members of the MSO also present small ensemble performances at numerous regional events and for residents of area retirement centers through the “Community Ensembles” outreach initiative funded by the Maryland Symphony Orchestra’s Music & Well-Being Society. In 2025, the MSO launched The Maryland Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO), region-wide, which strives to nurture and empower young musicians by providing professional mentorship and enhance the existing musical community within our region through the shared goal of achieving musical excellence through collaboration, education, and the enjoyment of music.
