Masuda Bhatti

Masuda Bhatti is a Bangladeshi journalist who is currently a Commissioner of the Information Commission. [1] Bhatti was known for filing a defamation lawsuit against Barrister Mainul Hosein who is connected with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and editor of New Nation daily and Daily Ittefaq. Early life

Bhatti was born in 1973 in Faridpur District. [4]

Career

In 2007, Bhatti worked as a journalist based in London. [5] She worked as the executive editor of a weekly newspaper in London. [6] She had contributed to Ajker Kagoj, Janomot, Moscow Time, and Prothom Alo. [4]

Bhatti was working as a columnist in 2010. [7]

Barrister Mainul Hosein made insulting comments about Bhatti in a television show in 2018. [8] Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaisarul Islam sent Hosein to jail in October in nine defamation cases filed over the incident including one by Bhatti. [9] Hosein was sued under the Digital Security Act. [10]

In August 2023, Bhatti was appointed Information Commissioner of Bangladesh along with retired District and Sessions Judge Shahidul Alam Jhinuk. [11] She replaced Suraiya Begum. [11] They will serve under chief information commissioner Dr Abdul Malek. [12]

Tofazzal Hossain, popularly known as Manik Miah, was a Pakistani Bengali journalist and politician. He served as the founding editor of The Daily Ittefaq. He wrote the editorial Rajnoitik Moncho. Most of his journalists were considered leftist, as Miah followed the pattern of Awami League. According to journalist and editor of Shongbad Bozlur Rahman, Awami activists followed his editorial more than any actual decision of a meeting. He was a close associate of the founder of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Censorship in Bangladesh refers to the government censorship of the press and infringement of freedom of speech. Article 39 of the constitution of Bangladesh protects free speech.

The Digital Security Act, 2018 is a digital security law in Bangladesh. This act was passed with the aim of preventing the spread of racism; sectarianism; extremism; terrorist propaganda; and hatred against religious or ethnic minorities through social media, print media or any other electronic media. Any content over the internet or any other media that was deemed pornographic or otherwise inappropriate by the government could be punished by fines or prison terms of various lengths. It is a controversial law and it was feared that the law could be used to suppress dissenters against the government due to some of its provisions that are vague and ambiguous, open to interpretation or prone to abuse. This law has been used to sue and arrest journalists, activists and also cyber criminals. It has been described as a "Draconian" law.

The Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 is an Act passed by the Jatiya Sangsad in 2006 to encourage and regulate ICT services in Bangladesh. Cybercrimes in Bangladesh are tried under the Information and Communication Technology Act. The act was strengthen through an amendment in 2013. The law was controversial due to parts which were viewed as threatening freedom of speech and its section 57 was replaced with the controversial Digital Security Act.
