Mathew Gates (born June 29, 1975) is a British-American former competitive ice dancer. With Eve Chalom, he is the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist and a two-time (1997, 1999) U.S. national silver medalist. He has medaled seven consecutive times at the US National Championships from Novice to Senior level. Gates is a two-time World competitor and member of Team USA. Gates is a World/International level Coach and Choreographer.
Gates was born June 29, 1975, in Hitchin, England. [1] He moved to the United States in 1992. [2] He is married to Kelly Gates, who is a former professional figure skater, figure skating coach, and a Registered Nurse. They have two children, and reside in North Carolina, US.
Gates started skating as a singles skater in England before focusing on ice dancing. As a young child, he trained as a gymnast. Gates was coached by Elizabeth Coates in England before he relocated to the U.S. [2] to train at the Detroit Skating Club.
Gates teamed up with American skater Eve Chalom in 1992, following a tryout in Boston arranged by Coates. [2] They decided to represent the United States. The duo trained at Detroit Skating Club with Igor Shpilband. After winning national titles on the novice level in 1993 and on the junior level in 1995, the duo took bronze at the 1996 U.S. Championships in their first season as seniors. [3]
In the 1996–97 season, Chalom/Gates were awarded silver at the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy and debuted on the Champions Series (later known as the Grand Prix series). They also won silver at the 1997 U.S. Championships and were assigned to the 1997 World Championships in Lausanne, where they placed 17th.
Chalom/Gates were ineligible for the 1998 Winter Olympics because he was not yet an American citizen. [2] They finished fourth at the 1998 U.S. Championships. They were coached by Coates and Igor Shpilband until the end of the 1997–98 season and then switched to Christopher Dean and Warren Maxwell in Plano, Texas. [3] [4] In their final season together, Chalom/Gates won their second national silver medal and finished 17th at the 1999 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Chalom/Gates skated professionally in numerous ice shows, and were invited to perform for the Champions on Ice Tour.
In January 2002, Gates tried out with Emilie Nussear on the advice of a coach, Tatiana Tarasova. [1] Nussear/Gates won the silver medal at the 2002 Karl Schäfer Memorial and placed 5th at the 2003 U.S. Championships. They were coached by Tarasova, Nikolai Morozov, and Maia Usova in Newington, Connecticut. [1]
Gates began working as a coach and choreographer by 2000. [5] In 2001, Gates won the PSA Choreographer award for “William Tell Overture” program for best men's performance - Michael Weiss. Since then, Gates has coached and choreographed for skaters from beginner through National, World & Olympic level. Former students/choreograph students include: Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, Zachary Donohue, Nikolaj Sorensen, Cathy Reed, Chris Reed, Anna Zadorozhniuk, Sergei Verbillo, Maxim Bolotin Olga Orlova, Tanja Kolbe, Stefano Caruso, Avonley Nguyen, Michael Weiss, Katarina Delcamp, Maxwell Gart, Kristin Fraser, Igor Lukanin, Collin Brubaker, Charlene Guignard, Marco Fabbri Alexandra Zaretsky, Roman Zaretsky, Mark Hanretty Molly Cesanak, Annabelle Morozov Nikolas Wamsteeker Maxim Naumov, Haley Sales Alina Milevska, Melissa Gregory, Denis Petukhov, Emily Zhang, Ting Cui, Isabella Tobias, Ashley Foy, Benjamin Blum, Irina Movchan Corenne Bruhns, among others.

Gates is an ISU Technical Specialist. [6] Gates currently coaches in Charlotte, NC and operates Elite Skating Academy / Elite Training Program. Gates travels to choreograph for international skaters throughout the US and Europe.

Tatiana Anatolyevna Tarasova is a Russian figure skating coach and national figure skating team adviser. Tarasova has been coach to more world and Olympic champions than any other coach in skating history. Her students have won a total of eight Olympic gold medals in three of the four Olympic figure skating disciplines, in addition to 41 gold medals at the European and World championships.
Eve Chalom is an American former competitive ice dancer. With Mathew Gates, she is the 1996 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist and a two-time U.S. national silver medalist.
Julia Sergeyevna Zlobina is a former competitive ice dancer. Competing for Azerbaijan with Alexei Sitnikov, she is the 2013 Golden Spin of Zagreb champion, 2013 Volvo Open Cup champion, 2012 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist, and 2013 Winter Universiade silver medalist. They competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics, finishing 12th, and have placed as high as sixth at the European Championships (2014).

Competing for Azerbaijan with Julia Zlobina, he is the 2013 Golden Spin of Zagreb champion, 2013 Volvo Open Cup champion, 2012 Nebelhorn Trophy silver medalist, and 2013 Winter Universiade silver medalist. They competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics, finishing 12th, and have placed as high as sixth at the European Championships (2014).
Igor Yuryevich Shpilband is an American ice dancing coach and former competitor for the Soviet Union. He is the 1983 World Junior champion with former partner Tatiana Gladkova.
Veronica Petrovna Pershina or Voyk is a former competitive pair skater who competed for the Soviet Union. With Marat Akbarov, she is the 1985 European bronze medalist and 1979 World Junior champion.
Alexandra "Sasha" Zaretsky is an Israeli retired ice dancer. With her brother Roman Zaretsky, she is the 2009 Skate America bronze medalist, 2009 Golden Spin of Zagreb champion, a three-time Nebelhorn Trophy medalist, and a three-time Israeli national champion. They finished as high as sixth at the World Championships and competed twice at the Winter Olympics, finishing tenth in 2010.
Roman Zaretsky is an Israeli retired ice dancer. With his sister, Alexandra Zaretsky, he is the 2009 Skate America bronze medalist, 2009 Golden Spin of Zagreb champion, a three-time Nebelhorn Trophy medalist, and a three-time Israeli national champion. They finished 6th at the World Championships and competed twice at the Winter Olympics, finishing 10th in 2010.
Luca Lanotte is an Italian former ice dancer. With partner Anna Cappellini, he is the 2014 World champion, the 2014 European champion, the 2015 Cup of China champion and a thirteen-time medalist on the Grand Prix series, and a seven-time Italian national champion (2012–18).
Nikolai Alexandrovich Morozov is a Russian former competitive ice dancer, figure skating coach and choreographer. He represented Russia, Belarus and Azerbaijan in competition. He coached Shizuka Arakawa to the 2006 Olympic gold medal and Miki Ando to two World titles. He is a former competitive ice dancer who appeared with Tatiana Navka for Belarus at the 1998 Winter Olympics, placing 16th, and at the 1998 World Championships, placing 10th. Earlier in his career, he competed with Olga Pershankova for Azerbaijan and with Ekaterina Gvozdkova for Russia.
Svetlana Kulikova is a Russian former competitive ice dancer. With Arseni Markov, she is the 2001 Winter Universiade bronze medalist and 2002 Skate Canada International bronze medalist. With Vitali Novikov, she is the 2003 Nebelhorn Trophy champion.
Marina Olegovna Zoueva or Zueva is a Russian figure skating coach, choreographer, and former competitor in ice dancing. Representing the Soviet Union with Andrei Vitman, she placed 5th at the 1977 World Championships and won two medals at Skate Canada International. She has coached a number of skaters to Olympic medals, including Ekaterina Gordeeva / Sergei Grinkov, Tessa Virtue / Scott Moir, Meryl Davis / Charlie White, and Maia Shibutani / Alex Shibutani.
Emilie Nussear Connors is an American former competitive ice dancer. She had the most success with partner Brandon Forsyth, with whom she is the 2000 World Junior silver medalist. They were coached by Bob Young in Simsbury, Connecticut.
Elizabeth Coates, sometimes known as Liz Coates, is a British ice dancing coach and former competitor. With Alan Abretti, she is the 1986 Fujifilm Trophy silver medalist and a two-time British national silver medalist.
Deividas Stagniūnas is a Lithuanian former ice dancer. With Isabella Tobias, he is the 2011 Skate America bronze medalist and placed in the top ten at two European Championships. They represented Lithuania at the 2014 Winter Olympics, where Stagniūnas was the flagbearer.
Greg Zuerlein is an American former ice dancer. With Madison Chock, he is the 2009 World Junior champion, 2008 JGP Final champion, and 2011 U.S. national bronze medalist. They competed together from 2006 to 2011.
Justyna Plutowska is a Polish ice dancer. With former partner Peter Gerber, she is the 2013 Finlandia Trophy bronze medalist and 2014 Bavarian Open champion.
Jeffrey Chen is an American ice dancer.
Davis and White are American former ice dancers. The pair are the 2014 Olympic Champion, the 2010 Olympic silver medalist, a two-time World champion, five-time Grand Prix Final champion (2009–2013), three-time Four Continents champion and six-time U.S. national champion (2009–2014). They also won a bronze medal in the team event at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Annabelle Nicole Morozov is an American ice dancer. With current skating partner, Jeffrey Chen, she is the 2024 CS Lombardia Trophy silver medalist.
